Abstract

Methods and systems for financing community shared vehicles are based in part on the amenity value of the community shared vehicle program. One method for determining an amenity value of a community shared vehicle program comprises collecting data on a plurality of factors of the community shared vehicle program over a period of time, determining a contributing value of each of the plurality of factors based on the data collected and calculating with a computer the amenity value of the community shared vehicle program per home in a serviced community from the value of each of the plurality of factors.

Claims

1. A computer-aided method for providing financing for a community shared vehicle program comprising:

determining an amenity value of the community shared vehicle program for each participating home in a serviced community by;

collecting, with a computer system, data of a plurality of factors of the community shared vehicle program over a data collection period;

calculating a contributing value of each of the plurality of factors based on the data collected; and

calculating the amenity value of the community shared vehicle program per participating home from the value of each of the plurality of factors and a number of participating homes, wherein the amenity value per participating home is further configured to finance at least a portion of the community shared vehicle program.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the financing has a term including a plurality of data collection periods, and the amenity value is determined at an end of each data collection period using data collected during a respective data collection period.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a stream of income for financing the community shared vehicle program by;

determining a home appraisal at an end of the data collection period for each participating homeowner;

combining the home appraisal with the amenity value to determine a total home value for each participating homeowner at the end of the data collection period;

determining a percent increase in home value by comparing the total home value to a total home value at a start of the data collection period; and

comparing the percent increase with a preselected house pricing index, wherein a gain over the preselected house pricing index provides the stream of income.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the financing has a term including a plurality of data collection periods, and the stream of income is determined at an end of each data collection period using data collected during a respective data collection period.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein collecting data comprises one or more of:

collecting data from an on-board vehicle controller of each shared vehicle, the data including one or more of miles driven per day, miles driven per leg of trip, number of destinations per day, type of destination and operating time per day of vehicle;

collecting manually inputted data;

collecting data from a GPS unit; and

collecting data from databases including one or more of regional fuel costs and regional electrical power costs.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein collecting data comprises monitoring social media for one or more of a number and type of reference to the community shared vehicle program.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating the amenity value comprises:

reducing the data for each of the plurality of factors to a dollar value;

combining the dollar value of each of the plurality of factors into a total amenity value; and

distributing the total amenity value equally to each participating home in the serviced community.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein calculating the amenity value comprises:

reducing the data for each of the plurality of factors to a dollar value per participating home in the serviced community; and

combining the dollar value of each of the plurality of factors into the amenity value per participating home.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of factors is a vehicle contribution value, and determining the contributing value comprises:

determining a residual value of each of the shared vehicles in the community shared vehicle program at an end of the data collection period;

determining a difference between the residual value from a previously determined residual value or an original value, whichever is more recent; and

determining the vehicle contribution value as a total of the difference for each of the shared vehicles.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of factors is a transportation cost savings comprising a total fuel savings and an opportunity cost savings.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the data includes number of miles driven by each shared vehicle, price of fuel near the community, price of electrical power for the community, and usage of electrical power for each shared vehicle, and determining the contributing value comprises:

determining a total number of miles driven by the shared vehicles in the data collection period;

determining a fuel cost associated with the total number of miles driven using the price of fuel near the community;

determining a utility cost for charging the shared vehicles by multiplying the usage of electrical power for each shared vehicle by the price of electrical power; and

calculating a total fuel savings by subtracting the utility cost for charging the shared vehicles during the period from the fuel cost.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the data comprises equivalent lease or purchase cost for an average vehicle and typical insurance costs, and determining the contributing value comprises:

determining opportunity cost savings of non-ownership by multiplying the equivalent lease or purchase cost and the typical insurance costs by a number of shared vehicles; and

weighting the opportunity cost savings of non-ownership based on a ratio of participating homeowners that would not require an additional vehicle if the community shared vehicle program was not available over the homes in the serviced community.

The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of factors is the usage pattern of the shared vehicles, the data includes one or more of miles driven per day, number of trips taken per day and destination of trips, and determining the contributing value of the usage pattern of the shared vehicles comprises:

determining usage patterns of the shared vehicles from the data; and

assigning a value to the usage patterns.

The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of factors is the enhancement of neighborhood characteristics, the data comprises time spent in the shared vehicles and number of personal interactions resulting from use of the shared vehicles, and determining the contributing value of the enhancement of neighborhood characteristics comprises:

determining the enhancement of neighborhood characteristics from the data; and

assigning a value to the enhancement of neighborhood characteristics.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing each participating home with an amenity value calculator operable to dynamically update the amenity value of the community shared vehicle program based on changes to one or more of the plurality of factors due to activity by a respective participating home.

16. A system for financing a community shared vehicle program comprising:

a data collection unit configured to collect data on a plurality of factors of the community shared vehicle program over a collection period; and

a calculating unit operable to determine an amenity value of a community shared vehicle program for each participating home in a serviced community by;

determining a contributing value of each of the plurality of factors; and

calculating the amenity value of the community shared vehicle program per participating home from the value of each of the plurality of factors and a number of participating homes, wherein the amenity value per participating home is further configured to finance at least a portion of the community shared vehicle program.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the data collection unit is further configured to:

determine a stream of income for financing the community shared vehicle program by;

determining a home appraisal at an end of the data collection period for each participating homeowner;

combining the home appraisal with the amenity value to determine a total home value for each participating homeowner at the end of the data collection period;

determining a percent increase in home value by comparing the total home value to a total home value at a start of the data collection period; and

comparing the percent increase with a preselected house pricing index, wherein a gain over the preselected house pricing index provides the stream of income.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the financing has a term including a plurality of data collection periods, and the stream of income is determined at an end of each data collection period using data collected during a respective data collection period.

19. The system of claim 16, wherein the data collection unit is configured to collect data from one or more of:

an on-board vehicle controller, the data including one or more of miles driven per day, miles driven per leg of trip, number of destinations per day, type of destination, and operational time per day of vehicle;

a participant through a user interface;

databases, including one or more of regional fuel costs and regional electrical power costs; and

social media sources for one or more of a number and a type of references to the community shared vehicle program.

20. The system of claim 16, wherein, when calculating the amenity value, the calculating unit is operable to one or both of:

reduce the data for each of the plurality of factors to a dollar value;

combine the dollar values of each of the plurality of factors into a total amenity value; and

distribute the total amenity value equally to each participating home in the serviced community; and

reduce the data for each of the plurality of factors to a dollar value per participating home in the serviced community; and

combine the dollar value of each of the plurality of factors into the amenity value per participating home.

21. The system of claim 16, wherein the plurality of factors includes a vehicle contribution value, transportation cost savings, a usage pattern of shared vehicles, and an enhancement of neighborhood characteristics.
