Abstract

A method and apparatus for uploading DME is provided herein. During operation vehicles in the field will upload their digital multimedia evidence (DME) to a mobile/intermediary upload point(s). These mobile/intermediary upload points preferably comprise computers existing in other vehicles that are not currently connected to a central repository. A mobile recorder (mDVR) will choose a particular mobile/intermediary upload point(s) based on a probability that the mobile upload point(s) will return to a connected upload point to upload the transferred DME.

Claims

1. A method for uploading digital multimedia evidence (DME) destined to a central repository, the DME uploaded to an intermediary upload device prior to being uploaded to the central repository, the method comprising the steps of:

tracking at a dispatch center, a location of a first vehicle, wherein the first vehicle is equipped with a first recorder that collects first digital multimedia evidence (DME);

tracking, at the dispatch center, available storage of the first recorder that collects the first DME;

dispatching by the dispatch center, a mobile upload vehicle to the location of the first vehicle based on the available storage of the first recorder;

uploading by the mobile upload vehicle, first DME from the first recorder to the upload vehicle, wherein the uploaded first DME is stored on the upload vehicle; and

uploading the first DME from upload vehicle to the central repository.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of:

tracking a location of a second vehicle, wherein the second vehicle is equipped with a second recorder that collects second digital multimedia evidence (DME);

tracking available storage of the second recorder that collects the second DME;

dispatching the upload vehicle to the location of the second vehicle based on the available storage of the second recorder;

uploading second DME from the second recorder to the upload vehicle; and

uploading the second DME from upload vehicle to the central repository.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the first and the second DME is uploaded to the upload vehicle prior to the first and the second DME being uploaded from upload vehicle to the central repository.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein upload vehicle tracks and follows the first and the second vehicles during the process of uploading the first and the second DME from the first and the second vehicles.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein upload vehicle tracks and follows the first vehicle during the process of uploading the first DME from the first vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein upload vehicle is not connected to the central repository when uploading the DME.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein upload vehicle comprises a mobile digital video recorders (mDVRs) that serves to store uploaded DME uploaded from the first recorder.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of tracking the location of the first vehicle comprises the step of utilizing an image sensor to track the location of the first vehicle.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of tracking the available storage of the first recorder comprises the step of receiving the available storage wirelessly from the first recorder.

10. A method for uploading digital multimedia evidence (DME) destined to a central repository, the DME uploaded to an intermediary upload device prior to being uploaded to the central repository, the method comprising the steps of:

being provided a location of a first vehicle, wherein the first vehicle is equipped with a first recorder that collects first digital multimedia evidence (DME);

navigating to the location of the first vehicle;

uploading first DME from the first recorder, wherein the uploaded first DME is stored on the upload vehicle;

navigating to the central repository; and

uploading the first DME from upload vehicle to the central repository.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the steps of:

being provided a location of a second vehicle, wherein the second vehicle is equipped with a second recorder that collects second digital multimedia evidence (DME);

navigating to the location of the second vehicle;

uploading second DME from the second recorder to the upload vehicle;

navigating to the central repository; and

uploading the second DME from upload vehicle to the central repository.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of uploading the first DME from the first recorder comprises the steps of:

tracking the first vehicle as it moves;

uploading from the first vehicle as it moves.

13. A mobile upload vehicle comprising:

a receiver being provided a location of a first vehicle, wherein the first vehicle is equipped with a first recorder that collects first digital multimedia evidence (DME);

location circuitry navigating to the location of the first vehicle;

the receiver uploading first DME from the first recorder, wherein the uploaded first DME is stored on the upload vehicle;

the location circuitry navigating to the central repository; and

a transmitter uploading the first DME from upload vehicle to the central repository.

14. The upload vehicle of claim 13 wherein:

the receiver is also provided a location of a second vehicle, wherein the second vehicle is equipped with a second recorder that collects second digital multimedia evidence (DME);

the location circuitry also navigates to the location of the second vehicle;

the receiver also uploads second DME from the second recorder to the upload vehicle;

the location circuitry also navigates to the central repository; and

the transmitter uploads both the first and the second DME to the central repository.

15. The upload vehicle of claim 14 further comprising an image sensor 609 that tracks the first vehicle as it moves, wherein the receiver uploads the first DME from the first vehicle as the first vehicle moves.
