Abstract

This disclosure provides techniques for guiding a user through a calibration operation of a mobile device having a motion sensor. The user may receive one or more visual cues to aid the user in positioning the device in one or more desired orientations or patterns of motion. The visual cues may be with respect to a virtual three dimensional environment that is responsive to a determined orientation of the device.

Claims

1. A method for calibrating a motion sensor of a device comprising:

generating a virtual three dimensional environment;

displaying a first visual cue to a user with respect to the virtual three dimensional environment configured to guide the user to position the device in a first desired orientation; and

providing an indication to the user when the device is positioned in the first desired orientation.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising updating the virtual environment in response to the user moving the device to the first desired orientation.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising displaying at least a second visual cue configured to guide the user to move the device from the first desired orientation to a second desired orientation.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying a plurality of visual cues configured to guide the user to position the device in a sequence of desired orientations.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the sequence of desired orientations is configured to result in a desired pattern of motion.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the desired pattern of motion results from complete rotations in three degrees of freedom.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the motion sensor is an accelerometer and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate relatively slow rotation around at least two axes of the device with periodic periods of motionlessness.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the motion sensor is a magnetometer and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate rotation around at least two axes of the device.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the motion sensor is a gyroscope and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to include a period of motionlessness in the first desired orientation.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein the motion sensor is a gyroscope and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate rotation around three axes of the device with periods of motionlessness.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing an indication to the user when the device is sufficiently calibrated.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the virtual three dimensional environment comprises a panorama.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first visual cue comprises a target object within the virtual three dimensional environment.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the first visual cue comprises an object within the virtual three dimensional environment that moves in response to an orientation of the device.

15. A sensor system comprising:

a device having at least one motion sensor; and

a guidance module configured to;

generate a virtual three dimensional environment;

display a first visual cue to a user with respect to the virtual three dimensional environment configured to guide the user to position the device in a first desired orientation; and

provide an indication to the user when the device is positioned in the first desired orientation.

16. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the guidance module is configured to update the virtual environment in response to the user moving the device to the first desired orientation.

17. The sensor system of claim 16, wherein the guidance module is configured to display at least a second visual cue to guide the user to move the device from the first desired orientation to a second desired orientation.

18. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the guidance module is configured to display a plurality of visual cues configured to guide the user to position the device in a sequence of desired orientations.

19. The sensor system of claim 18, wherein the sequence of desired orientations is configured to result in a desired pattern of motion.

20. The sensor system of claim 19, wherein the desired pattern of motion results from complete rotations in three degrees of freedom.

21. The sensor system of claim 19, wherein the motion sensor is an accelerometer and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate relatively slow rotation around at least two axes of the device with periodic periods of motionlessness.

22. The sensor system of claim 19, wherein the motion sensor is a magnetometer and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate rotation around at least two axes of the device.

23. The sensor system of claim 19, wherein the motion sensor is a gyroscope and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to include a period of motionlessness in the first desired orientation.

24. The sensor system of claim 19, wherein the motion sensor is a gyroscope and wherein the desired pattern of motion is configured to incorporate rotation around three axes of the device with periods of motionlessness.

25. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the guidance module is configured to provide an indication to the user when the device is sufficiently calibrated.

26. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the virtual three dimensional environment comprises a panorama.

27. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the first visual cue comprises a target object within the virtual three dimensional environment.

28. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein the first visual cue comprises an object within the virtual three dimensional environment that moves in response to an orientation of the device.
