Abstract

Systems, device and techniques are disclosed for performing a media action such as a democratic skip action based on input from one or more users that are part of a media group. One or more users within a media group may provide preference indicators (e.g., skip, keep, null) and, upon reaching a threshold number of preference indicators, a media action (e.g., skip song) may be taken. The preference indicators may be weighed based on one or more factors such as a user or media item.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

identifying a plurality of users as being associated with a first media group;

providing a media content to the plurality of users associated with the first media group;

receiving at least one preference indicator from at least one of the plurality of users associated with the first media group;

determining that the received at least one preference indicator meets a preference indicator threshold;

performing a media action based on the determination that the preference indicator threshold has been met.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing, to the plurality of users associated with the first media group, the same media content at the same time.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing, to the plurality of users associated with the first media group, the same media content playlist.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a user type for at least one of the plurality of users associated with the first media group.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein a user type is selected from the group consisting of:

a host, a guest, a tastemaker, an active user, and a passive user.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein a preference indicator weight is applied to a preference indicator.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the preference indicator weight is based on a factor selected from the group consisting of:

a user type, a user history, a user role, and a user rank.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

associating a financial value with the media content; and

modifying the preference indicator threshold based on the financial value.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a media content history.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a media content type.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a sponsorship factor.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a geographic location.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the geographic location is associated with at least one selected from the group consisting of:

a user, a group of users, and a location associated with the media content.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein a preference indicator is one selected from the group consisting of a skip, a keep, and a null indicator.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein a preference indicator is based on a user intensity associated with the media content.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the user intensity is either a positive intensity or a negative intensity.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a user nomination corresponding to a nominated user.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising determining a media action based only on a preference indicator provided by the nominated user.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising assigning a preference indicator weight to a preference indicator provided by the nominated user.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein a media action is selected from the group consisting of a skip, a keep, a modify metadata, an add to playlist, and a remove from playlist.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving one or more preference indicators, each comprising a skip associated with the media content, wherein the media content is a first media content;

determining that the number of skip preference indicators exceeds the preference indicator threshold; and

terminating playback of the first media content.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising initiating playback of a second media content.

23. A system comprising:

a processor configured to;

identify a plurality of users as being associated with a first media group;

provide a media content to the plurality of users associated with the first media group;

receive at least one preference indicator from at least one of the plurality of users associated with the first media group;

determine that the received at least one preference indicator meets a preference indicator threshold;

perform a media action based on the determination that the preference indicator threshold has been met.

24. The system of claim 23, further configured to provide, to the plurality of users associated with the first media group, the same media content at the same time.

25. The system of claim 23, further configured to provide, to the plurality of users associated with the first media group, the same media content playlist.

26. The system of claim 23, further configured to determining a user type for at least one of the plurality of users associated with the first media group.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein a user type is selected from the group consisting of:

a host, a guest, a tastemaker, an active user, and a passive user.

28. The system of claim 23, wherein a preference indicator weight is applied to a preference indicator.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the preference indicator weight is based on a factor selected from the group consisting of:

a user type, a user history, a user role, and a user rank.

30. The system of claim 23, further configured to:

associating a financial value with the media content; and

modifying the preference indicator threshold based on the financial value.

31. The system of claim 23, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a media content history.

32. The system of claim 23, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a media content type.

33. The system of claim 23, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a sponsorship factor.

34. The system of claim 23, wherein the preference indicator threshold is generated based on a geographic location.

35. The system of claim 34, wherein the geographic location is associated with at least one selected from the group consisting of:

a user, a group of users, and a location associated with the media content.

36. The system of claim 23, wherein a preference indicator is one selected from the group consisting of a skip, a keep, and a null indicator.

37. The system of claim 23, wherein a preference indicator is based on a user intensity associated with the media content.

38. The system of claim 37, wherein the user intensity is either a positive intensity or a negative intensity.

39. The system of claim 23, further comprising receiving a user nomination corresponding to a nominated user.

40. The system of claim 39, further comprising determining a media action based only on a preference indicator provided by the nominated user.

41. The system of claim 39, further comprising assigning a preference indicator weight to a preference indicator provided by the nominated user.

42. The system of claim 23, wherein a media action is selected from the group consisting of a skip, a keep, a modify metadata, an add to playlist, and a remove from playlist.

43. The system of claim 23, further comprising:

receiving one or more preference indicators, each comprising a skip associated with the media content, wherein the media content is a first media content;

determining that the number of skip preference indicators exceeds the preference indicator threshold; and

terminating playback of the first media content.

44. The system of claim 43, further comprising initiating playback of a second media content.
