Abstract

A polymer composition having a reduced tendency to create a static electric charge during a molding operation is provided. More particularly, the composition contains an ionic liquid that is distributed within a polymer matrix that contains an aromatic polymer. In addition to being electrically conductive, the ionic liquid can exist in liquid form during melt processing, which allows it to be more uniformly blended within the aromatic polymer matrix. This improves electrical connectivity and thereby enhances the ability of the composition to rapidly dissipate static electric charges from its surface.

Claims

1. A polymer composition that comprises an ionic liquid that is distributed within a polymer matrix, wherein the ionic liquid has a melting temperature of about 400°

C. or less and is a salt that contains a cationic species and counterion, and wherein the polymer matrix includes an aromatic polymer having a glass transition temperature of about 100°

C. or more.

2. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein ionic liquids constitute from about 0.1 wt. % to about 10 wt. % of the composition.

3. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein aromatic polymers constitute from about 25 wt. % to about 95 wt. % of the composition.

4. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the cationic species is a quaternary onium.

5. The polymer composition of claim 4, wherein the quaternary onium is an ammonium compound having the structure N⁺R¹R²R³R⁴, wherein R¹, R², and/or R³ are independently a C₁-C₆ alkyl and R⁴ is hydrogen or a C₁-C₄ alkyl group.

6. The polymer composition of claim 5, wherein the ammonium compound is tri-butylmethylammonium.

7. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the counterion is a halogen, sulfate, sultanate, sulfosuccinate, amide, imide, borate, phosphate, phosphinate, antimonate, aluminate, fatty acid carboxylate, cyanate, acetate, or a combination thereof.

8. The polymer composition of claim 7, wherein the counterion is bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, or bis(tri-fluoromethyl)imide.

9. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the aromatic polymer is semi-crystalline.

10. The polymer composition of claim 9, wherein the aromatic polymer is a polyamide.

11. The polymer composition of claim 10, wherein the polyamide has a melting temperature of about 200°

C. or more.

12. The polymer composition of claim 10, wherein the polyamide contains an aromatic repeating unit derived from an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic repeating unit derived from an aliphatic diamine having from 4 to 14 carbon atoms.

13. The polymer composition of claim 12, wherein the aromatic dicarboxylic acid is terephthalic acid.

14. The polymer composition of claim 12, wherein the aliphatic diamine is 1,9-nonanediamine, 2-methyl-1,8-octanediamine, or a combination thereof.

15. The polymer composition of claim 9, wherein the aromatic polymer is a polyaryletherketone.

16. The polymer composition of claim 1, wherein the aromatic polymer is substantially amorphous.

17. The polymer composition of claim 16, wherein the aromatic polymer is polyphenylene oxide.

18. The polymer composition of claim 16, wherein the aromatic polymer is a polyetherimide.

19. The polymer composition of claim 16, wherein the aromatic polymer is a polycarbonate.

20. The polymer composition of claim 19, wherein the polycarbonate contains aromatic repeating units derived from a bisphenol.

21. The polymer composition of claim 20, wherein the bisphenol is 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol.

22. The polymer composition of claim 1, further comprising carbon fibers, graphite, carbon black, or a combination thereof.

23. The polymer composition of claim 1, further comprising mineral fibers, glass fibers, or a combination thereof.

24. A molded part that comprises a polymer composition, wherein the polymer composition comprises an ionic liquid distributed within a polymer matrix, and wherein the polymer matrix includes an aromatic polymer having a glass transition temperature of about 100°

C. or more.

25. The molded part of claim 24, wherein the part exhibits a surface resistivity of about 1×

10¹⁵ ohms or less as determined in accordance with IEC 60093 and/or a volume resistivity of about 1×

10¹⁵ ohm-m or less as determined in accordance with IEC 60093.

26. A camera module that comprises the molded part of claim 24.
