Abstract

A process for making a starch-based resin from a starch-based plant feed stock generally comprising the steps of extracting starch content from prepared feed stock, preparing a dried starch from the extracted starch content that may be polymerized in a reactor with a catalytic material, a petroleum-based plastic resin, a quantity of glycerol, and an oil which is high in free hydrogen, and partially cross-linking the polymerized starch with a petroleum-based plastic resin to form a starch-based resin that may be used to produce starch-based film and bag products and other articles of manufacture that have unique degradation properties is disclosed herein.

Claims

1. :

The process of making a starch-based resin from a starch-based plant feed stock, comprising;

growing, harvesting, and peeling the starch-based plant feed stock;

grinding, washing, and extracting the starch content from the peeled feed stock;

drying the starch content by substantially removing the water content from the starch content to form a dried starch;

polymerizing the dried starch in a reactor;

further polymerizing the dried starch in a reactor with a catalytic material, a petroleum-based plastic resin, a quantity of glycerol, and an oil which is high in free hydrogen, and;

partially cross-linking the polymerized dried starch with the petroleum-based plastic resin to form the starch-based resin.

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the starch content is extracted from the peeled feed stock by pressurization.

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the catalytic material is in the maleic anhydride family.

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the petroleum-based plastic resin is polyethylene.

5. :

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the oil is farm-grown non-GMO.

6. :

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the starch-based plant feed stock is selected from an Amylopectin-rich Tapioca, Sago, or other related biologic plant.

The process of claim 1 wherein;

the starch-based plant feed stock is non-GMO.

8. :

A process of manufacturing a starch-based resin in a reactor comprising;

combining a compatibilizer with a plurality of plastic molecules;

subsequently combining the compatibilized plastic molecules with a plurality of starch-based molecules; and

producing a starch-based plastic resin that is partially cross-linked.

The process of claim 8 wherein;

the plastic molecules include a polyethylene chain.

The process of claim 8 wherein;

the starch-based molecules are selected from the Tapioca or Sago family.

The process of claim 8 wherein;

the starch-based plastic resin degrades in soil.

The process of claim 8 wherein;

the compatibilizer is selected from the carbon-hydrogen-oxygen family.

An article manufactured from a starch-based resin from an Amylopectin-rich non-GMO plant feed stock, comprising;

growing, harvesting, and peeling the Amylopectin-rich, non GMO plant feed stock;

grinding, washing, and extracting the starch content from the feed stock;

drying the starch by substantially removing the water content from the starch content to form a mass of dried starch;

polymerizing the dried starch in a reactor a first time;

polymerizing the dried starch in a reactor a second time with a catalytic material, a petroleum-based plastic resin, a quantity of glycerol, and an oil which is high in free hydrogen;

partially cross-linking the twice polymerized dried starch with the petroleum-based plastic resin; and

manufacturing an article using the cross-linked starch.

The article in claim 14 wherein;

the article is manufactured in any one or more methods including;

injection molding, vacuum-forming, blow molding, compression molding, and extrusion.

The article in claim 14 wherein;

the article is made from a film, the film produced on essentially the same extruder used to manufacture comparable petroleum-based film, wherein the extrusion temperature to manufacture or convert the film is substantially the same or less.

The article in claim 14 wherein;

the article is degradable when disposed.

18. :

A process of manufacturing a starch-based resin in a reactor comprising;

growing a non-GMO plant with a high starch content in a localized region;

processing the non-GMO plant in the localized region to extract the starch content;

further processing the starch content in a localized reactor with a plurality of compatibilized plastic molecules;

partially cross-linking at least a portion of the starch content with at least a portion of the plastic molecules; and

converting the processed starch content and the compatibilized plastic molecules into a non-GMO starch-based plastic resin.

The process in claim 18 wherein;

the non-GMO plant with a high starch content is selected from an Amylopectin-rich Tapioca, Sago, or other related biologic plant.

20. :

The process in claim 18 wherein;

the starch-based resin is degradable.
