Abstract

A transdermal intraosseous device for coupling a bone stump to an external prosthetic device includes a bone fixator, an external connector and a plurality of modular interface components. The bone fixator includes a proximal portion configured for anchoring into the bone stump of the patient and a distal portion including a base collar configured for subcutaneous implantation. The external connector has a distal portion for coupling to the external prosthetic device and a proximal portion for coupling to the distal portion of the bone fixator. Each interface component can be removably coupled to the base collar and has different size and shape to provide a surgeon-selected transition between the prosthetic device and the patient'"'"'s skin.

Claims

1. A transdermal intraosseous device for coupling a bone stump to an external prosthetic device comprising:

a bone fixator including a distal portion and a proximal portion, the proximal portion configured for anchoring into a bone stump of the patient, the distal portion including a base collar configured for subcutaneous implantation;

an external connector having a distal portion couplable to an external prosthetic device for the bone stump and a proximal portion couplable to the distal portion of the bone fixator; and

a plurality of separate modular interface components, each interface component removably couplable to the base collar, each interface component having a different size and shape configured to provide a surgeon-selectable transition between the prosthetic device and the patient'"'"'s skin.

2. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1, wherein the external connector includes a bore receiving the distal portion of the bone fixator via a taper-to-taper connection.

3. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 2, wherein the distal portion of the bone fixator includes a well and a compliant member within the well.

4. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 3, wherein the compliant member includes Belleville washers.

5. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 3, wherein the compliant member is a spring.

6. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1, wherein each modular interface component includes a porous layer.

7. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 6, wherein the proximal portion of the external connector terminates under the skin and under the porous layer of the modular interface component.

8. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 1, wherein the proximal portion of the bone fixator is received within an intramedullary canal of the patient.

9. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 3, further comprising an anchoring member having a proximal anchoring plug and an elongated shaft passing through the bone fixator and configured for pre-stressing the compliant member.

10. The transdermal intraosseous device 3, further comprising a sealing plug in the bore of the external connector and at least partially into the well of the distal portion of the bone fixator.

11. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 10, wherein the sealing plug comprises an elastomer.

12. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 10, wherein the sealing plug comprises an O-ring.

13. A transdermal intraosseous device for coupling a bone stump to an external prosthetic device comprising:

a bone fixator including a distal portion and a proximal portion, the proximal portion configured for anchoring into a bone stump of the patient; and

a modular transdermal adapter including first and second components, the first component including a proximal bore couplable to the distal portion of the bone fixator subcutaneously at a first stage of a surgical procedure, and the second component removably couplable transcutaneously to the first component at a second stage of the surgical procedure.

14. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 13, further comprising a base collar between the proximal and distal portions of the bone fixator.

15. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 13, further comprising a compliant member received in an inner bore of the distal portion of the bone fixator.

The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 13, wherein the proximal bore of the first component is couplable to the distal portion of the bone fixator with a taper-to-taper connection and the first component includes a distal bore couplable to the second component by a taper-to-taper connection.

17. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 16, wherein the first component includes a dome-shaped portion.

18. The transdermal intraosseous device of claim 17, wherein the dome-shaped portion includes a porous layer interfacing with skin of the bone stump of the patient.

19. A method of implanting a transdermal intraosseous device for coupling an external prosthetic device to a bone stump, the method comprising:

implanting a bone fixator in an intramedullary canal of the bone stump;

connecting subcutaneously a first component of a transdermal adapter to a distal portion of the bone fixator;

covering a dome-shaped portion of the first component with skin from the bone stump;

allowing the skin to heal over a porous layer of the dome-shaped portion; and

coupling transcutaneously a proximal portion of a second component of the transdermal adapter to the first component.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising inserting the proximal portion of the second component into a distal bore of the first component to form a taper-to-taper connection.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising inserting the distal portion of the bone fixator into a proximal bore of the first component to form a taper-to-taper connection.
