Abstract

Aspects of the present invention relate to providing see-through computer display with improved optics.

Claims

1. A head-worn display with multiply folded optics providing improved displayed images overlaid onto a see-through view of a surrounding environment comprising:

a. A solid prism with an angled planar surface;

b. a flat partially reflective plate bonded to the planar surface that transmits a portion of an illuminating light and reflects a portion of an image light associated with the displayed images;

c. a reflective image source that reflects the illuminating light to provide the image light; and

d. a backlight attached to the angled planar surface including a prism film to direct a portion of the illuminating light toward the reflective image source.

2. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the reflective image source is an LCOS.

3. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the flat partially reflective plate includes a reflective polarizer.

4. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the prism film is bonded to the flat partially reflective plate.

5. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the prism film is oriented with the prisms facing away from the reflective image source and toward a light source for the illuminating light.

6. The head-worn display of claim 5 wherein the prism film splits the illuminating light into two cones and only one cone illuminates the reflective image source.

7. The head-worn display of claim 6 further comprising an analyzer polarizer that absorbs the cone of illuminating light that doesn'"'"'t illuminate the reflective image source.

8. The head-worn display of claim 7 wherein the analyzer polarizer further absorbs the image light associated with dark portions in the displayed image.

9. The head-worn display of claim 1 wherein the flat reflective plate is bonded to the planar surface with a transparent adhesive that is index matched to the solid prism.

10. The head-worn display of claim 9 wherein the refractive index of the transparent adhesive is within +/−

0.05 of the refractive index of the solid prism.
