Platinum complexes that exhibit photoabsorption and photoemission, methods of making such complexes, and applications thereof are disclosed, including optical devices comprising the complexes.

17. A method for manufacturing an electronic device, the method comprising providing a layer comprising the compound of claim 1, and then positioning the layer in the device.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the layer is an emissive layer.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the layer is an absorbing layer.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the electronic device comprises a light emitting device.

21. The method of claim 17, wherein the electronic device comprises an organic light emitting diode.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein the electronic device comprises a photovoltaic device.
