Abstract

A golf aid including a practice mode for use while hitting a plurality of golf balls with a golf club includes a golf ball tracking system, a heads up display, and a processor. The golf ball tracking system tracks a plurality of golf ball trajectories, each corresponding to a respective golf ball being hit by the golf club. The heads up display is configured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head and display an image within a field of view of the user. The processor is configured to compute one or more shot statistics for each one of the plurality of trajectories, display the one or more computed shot statistics and a plurality of trajectory traces within the field of view of the user.

Claims

1. A golf aid including a practice mode for use while hitting a plurality of golf balls with a golf club, the golf aid comprising:

a golf ball tracking system for tracking a plurality of golf ball trajectories, each one of the plurality of trajectories corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of golf balls being hit by the golf club;

a heads up display configured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head and display an image within a field of view of the user;

a processor in communication with the golf ball tracking system and the heads up display device, the processor configured to;

compute one or more shot statistics for each one of the plurality of trajectories;

wherein the one or more shot statistics include at least one of an initial ball speed, a spin rate, a total distance, and a carry distance; and

display the one or more computed shot statistics within the field of view of the user via the heads up display following each one of the plurality of golf balls being hit by the golf club, wherein the displayed shot statistics correspond to an immediately preceding trajectory;

display a plurality of traces within the field of view of the user via the heads up display, wherein each one of the plurality of traces corresponds to a respective one of the plurality of trajectories.

2. The golf aid of claim 1, wherein the processor is further configured to:

compute one or more club statistics for the golf club from the computed shot statistics, wherein the one or more club statistics include at least one of an average carry distance for the golf club, an average total distance for the golf club, and an accuracy metric for the golf club; and

display the one or more computed club statistics within the field of view of the user via the heads up display.

3. The golf aid of claim 2, further comprising a camera disposed on the heads up display and configured to capture an image including a portion of the user'"'"'s field of view;

wherein the processor is further configured to;

receive the captured image from the camera;

detect an identifier on the golf club from the received image, the identifier corresponding to a loft angle of the club;

group the one or more computed shot statistics according to a detected identifier;

wherein the processor computes the one or more club statistics for the golf club from the one or more shot statistics grouped to a single detected identifier.

4. The golf aid of claim 3, wherein the processor is configured to detect an identifier on the golf club from the received image by optically recognizing a number or a letter disposed on a sole of the golf club.

5. The golf aid of claim 2, wherein the accuracy metric corresponds to a width of a landing zone defined by a landing position of each of the plurality of golf balls.

6. The golf aid of claim 5, wherein the accuracy metric is a one standard deviation width of a distribution of landing positions that includes the landing position of each of the plurality of golf balls.

7. The golf aid of claim 2, wherein the golf club is a first golf club;

and

wherein the processor is further configured to compute one or more club statistics for a second golf club.

8. A golf aid including a practice mode for use while hitting a first plurality of golf balls with a first golf club and while hitting a second plurality of golf balls with a second golf club, the golf aid comprising:

a golf ball tracking system for tracking a first plurality of golf ball trajectories each one of the first plurality of golf ball trajectories corresponding to a respective one of the first plurality of golf balls being hit by the first golf club, and for tracking a second plurality of golf ball trajectories each one of the second plurality of golf ball trajectories corresponding to a respective one of the second plurality of golf balls being hit by the second golf club;

a heads up display configured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head and display an image within a field of view of the user; and

a processor in communication with the golf ball tracking system and the heads up display device, the processor configured to;

compute a first club statistic for the first golf club from the tracked first plurality of golf ball trajectories;

compute a second club statistic for the second golf club from the tracked second plurality of golf ball trajectories;

display at least one of the first club statistic and the second club statistic within the field of view of the user via the heads up display;

wherein the first club statistic includes at least one of an average carry distance for the first golf club, an average total distance for the first golf club, and an accuracy metric for the first golf club; and

wherein the second club statistic includes at least one of an average carry distance for the second golf club, an average total distance for the second golf club, and an accuracy metric for the second golf club.

9. The golf aid of claim 8, further comprising a camera disposed on the heads up display and configured to capture an image including a portion of the user'"'"'s field of view;

wherein the processor is further configured to;

receive a plurality of captured images from the camera;

detect a first identifier corresponding to the first golf club from the plurality of received images;

detect a second identifier corresponding to the second golf club from the plurality of received images; and

use at least one of the first identifier and the second identifier to associate a newly tracked trajectory with one of the first plurality of golf ball trajectories and the second plurality of golf ball trajectories.

10. The golf aid of claim 9, wherein the processor is configured to detect one of the first and second identifiers from the plurality of received images by optically recognizing a number or a letter.

11. The golf aid of claim 9, wherein the accuracy metric corresponds to the width of a landing zone defined by a landing position of each golf ball of one of the first plurality of golf balls and the second plurality of golf balls.

12. The golf aid of claim 9, wherein the accuracy metric is a one standard deviation width of a distribution of landing positions that includes the landing position of each golf ball of one of the first plurality of golf balls and the second plurality of golf balls.

13. The golf aid of claim 9, wherein the processor is further configured to:

compute a first shot statistic for the first golf club from the tracked first plurality of golf ball trajectories;

compute a second shot statistic for the second golf club from the tracked second plurality of golf ball trajectories;

wherein each of the first shot statistic and the second shot statistic includes at least one of an initial ball speed, a spin rate, a total distance, and a carry distance; and

display the one or more computed shot statistics within the field of view of the user via the heads up display.

14. A non-transitory, computer readable medium having stored thereon instructions for execution by a processor to perform steps comprising:

receiving an indication of a tracked flight of a plurality of golf ball trajectories from a sensor, each one of the plurality of trajectories corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of golf balls being hit by a golf club;

computing one or more shot statistics for each one of the plurality of trajectories;

wherein the one or more shot statistics include at least one of an initial ball speed, a spin rate, a total distance, and a carry distance;

displaying the one or more computed shot statistics within the field of view of the user via a heads up display configured to be worn on the user'"'"'s head; and

displaying a plurality of traces within the field of view of the user via the heads up display, wherein each one of the plurality of traces corresponds to a respective one of the plurality of trajectories.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 14, further comprising instructions for causing the processor to perform steps comprising:

computing one or more club statistics for the golf club from the computed shot statistics, wherein the one or more club statistics include at least one of an average carry distance for the golf club, an average total distance for the golf club, and an accuracy metric for the golf club; and

displaying the one or more computed club statistics within the field of view of the user via the heads up display.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising instructions for causing the processor to perform steps comprising:

receiving an image from a camera disposed in communication with the heads up display and corresponding to the field of view of the user;

detecting an identifier on the golf club from the received image, the identifier corresponding to a loft angle of the club;

grouping the one or more computed shot statistics according to a detected identifier; and

wherein computing the one or more club statistics for the golf club includes computing the one or more club statistics from the one or more shot statistics grouped to a single detected identifier.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 16, wherein detecting an identifier on the golf club from the received image includes optically recognizing a number or a letter disposed on a sole of the golf club.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the accuracy metric corresponds to a width of a landing zone defined by a landing position of each of the plurality of golf balls.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the accuracy metric is a one standard deviation width of a distribution of landing positions that includes the landing position of each of the plurality of golf balls.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the golf club is a first golf club;

and

further comprising instructions for causing the processor to compute one or more club statistics for a second golf club.
