Abstract

A system for detecting leaks within a pipe network is provided. The system includes mobile sensors that can be non-permanently attached to a pipe in the pipe network. The system further includes mobile devices. The mobile sensors can send sensor measurements to the mobile devices, and the mobile devices can send sensor measurements across a communications network to an application server. The application server is configured to process the sensor measurements in order to estimate a location of a leak in the pipe network. The system further includes a time source component, with the mobile devices communicating with the time source component in order to synchronize a sensor measurement recording time of the mobile sensors.

Claims

1. A system for detecting leaks within a pipe network, the system comprising:

a plurality of mobile sensors, wherein each mobile sensor in the plurality of mobile sensors is configured to be non-permanently attached to a pipe in the pipe network;

a plurality of mobile devices, wherein each mobile sensor in the plurality of mobile sensors is configured to communicate with a mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices in order to transmit sensor measurements to the mobile device;

an application server configured to process sensor measurements from the plurality of mobile sensors in order to estimate a location of a leak in the pipe network, wherein each mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices is configured to communicate with the application server using a communications network in order to transmit sensor measurements to the application server; and

a time source component, wherein each mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices is configured to communicate with the time source component in order to synchronize a sensor measurement recording time of the plurality of mobile sensors.

2. The system of claim 1, the system further comprising:

a plurality of fixed sensors, wherein each fixed sensor in the plurality of fixed sensors is configured to be permanently attached to a pipe in the pipe network,

wherein each fixed sensor in the plurality of fixed sensors is configured to communicate with the application server in order to transmit sensor measurements to the application server, and

wherein the application server is further configured to process sensor measurements from the plurality of fixed sensors in order to estimate a location of a leak in the pipe network

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the time source component comprises a Global Positioning System (“

GPS”

) component.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the time source component comprises a time server.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of mobile devices comprises smartphones.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein the application server produces a first estimate of the location of the leak by processing first sensor measurements from the plurality of fixed sensors.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the application server selects a first plurality of locations for placement of the plurality of mobile sensors based on the first estimate of the location of the leak.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the application server produces a second estimate of the location of the leak by processing second sensor measurements from the plurality of mobile sensors, and

wherein the second sensor measurements are generated by the plurality of mobile sensors when located at the first plurality of locations.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the second estimate of the location of the leak is a more accurate estimate than the first estimate of the location of the leak.

10. A method for detecting leaks within a pipe network, the method comprising:

non-permanently attaching each mobile sensor in a plurality of mobile sensors to a pipe in the pipe network;

transmitting sensor measurements from each mobile sensor in the plurality of mobile sensors to a mobile device in a plurality of mobile devices;

transmitting sensor measurements from each mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices to an application server;

estimating a location of a leak in the pipe network by processing sensor measurements using the application server; and

transmitting a time value from a time source component to each mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices in order to synchronize a sensor measurement recording time of the plurality of mobile sensors.

11. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising:

permanently attaching each fixed sensor in a plurality of fixed sensors to a pipe in the pipe network; and

transmitting sensor measurements from each fixed sensor in the plurality of fixed sensors to the application server.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the time source component comprises a Global Positioning System (“

GPS”

) component.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the time source component comprises a time server.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the plurality of mobile devices comprises smartphones.

15. The method of claim 11, the method further comprising:

producing a first estimate of the location of the leak by processing at the application server first sensor measurements from the plurality of fixed sensors.

16. The method of claim 15, the method further comprising:

selecting a first plurality of locations for placement of the plurality of mobile sensors based on the first estimate of the location of the leak.

17. The method of claim 16, the method further comprising:

generating second sensor measurements using the plurality of mobile sensors when the plurality of mobile sensors are located at the first plurality of locations; and

producing a second estimate of the location of the leak by processing at the application server the second sensor measurements from the plurality of mobile sensors.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the second estimate of the location of the leak is a more accurate estimate than the first estimate of the location of the leak.

19. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising:

determining at the application server an absolute recording time;

transmitting the absolute recording time from the application server to the plurality of mobile devices;

calculating a local time offset at a first mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices based on a local clock of the first mobile device and the time value from the time source component; and

calculating a local recording time at the first mobile device based at least in part on the absolute recording time and the local time offset.

20. The method of claim 10, the method further comprising:

forming the mobile devices in the plurality of mobile devices into groups in order to perform synchronized sensor measurement, based at least in part on a ready status of each mobile device in the plurality of mobile devices.
