Abstract

A method and system for providing enhanced packet data services to user equipment (UE) is disclosed. The method disclosed comprises: switching to a first Radio Access Network (RAN) from a second RAN when the UE suffers loss of coverage in the second RAN during a mobility of the UE, and transmitting a request to the first RAN when the UE detects the coverage in the second RAN to redirect the UE to the second RAN.

16. An operation method for a User Equipment (UE), the method comprises:

switching to a first Radio Access Network (RAN) from a second RAN when the UE suffers loss of coverage in the second RAN during a mobility of the UE; and

transmitting a request to the first RAN when the UE detects the coverage in the second RAN to redirect the UE to the second RAN.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first RAN is one of second generation (2G) RAN, a third generation (3G) RAN or a GSM EDGE RAN (GERAN), and the second RAN is a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) RAN.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the request comprises a Signaling Connection Release Indication (SCRI) message.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

receiving a Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection release message from the first RAN in response to the SCRI message to perform one of redirection or reselection to the second RAN.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

releasing the RRC connection in response to the RRC connection release connection message.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

releasing the RRC connection locally when a predefined time interval is expired after transmitting the SCRI message to the first RAN.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

starting a timer with the predefined time interval when the UE detects the second RAN;

releasing the RRC connection locally after expiry of the predefined time interval when the UE is attached with the first RAN; and

performing one of reselection or redirection to the second RAN.

23. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

performing one of redirection or reselection to the second RAN for obtaining an enhanced packet data services.

24. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

detecting the second RAN during the mobility of the UE across different RANs,

wherein the second RAN is detected using at least one of;

neighbor cell list in the first RAN, a database in the UE, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the second RAN and measurements performed on the second RAN, and

wherein the database stores System Information Blocks (SIBs), and the SIB values is obtained from the second RAN on which UE is connected initially.

25. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

starting a timer with a predefined time interval when the UE detects the second RAN and releases the radio connection with the GERAN.

26. A User Equipment (UE), the UE comprising:

a processor coupled to at least one networking device,

wherein the processor is configured to control to switch to a first Radio Access Network (RAN) from a second RAN when the UE suffers loss of coverage in the second RAN during a mobility of the UE, and to transmit a request to the first RAN via the at least one network device when the UE detects the coverage in the second RAN to redirect the UE to the second RAN.

27. The UE of claim 26, wherein the first RAN is one of second generation (2G) RAN, a third generation (3G) RAN or a GSM EDGE RAN (GERAN), and the second RAN is a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) RAN.

28. The UE of claim 26, wherein the request comprises a Signaling Connection Release Indication (SCRI) message.

29. The UE of claim 28, wherein the processor receives a Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection release message from the first RAN in response to the SCRI message to perform one of redirection or reselection to the second RAN.

30. The UE of claim 29, wherein the processor releases the RRC connection in response to the RRC connection release connection message.

31. The UE of claim 29, wherein the processor releases the RRC connection locally when a predefined time interval is expired after transmitting the SCRI message to the first RAN.

The UE of claim 31, wherein the processor starts a timer with the predefined time interval when the UE detects the second RAN, releases the RRC connection locally after expiry of the predefined time interval when the UE is attached with the first RAN and performs one of reselection or redirection to the second RAN.

33. The UE of claim 30, wherein the processor performs one of redirection or reselection to the second RAN for obtaining an enhanced packet data services.

34. The UE of claim 26,

wherein the processor further detects the second RAN during the mobility of the UE across different RANs,

wherein the second RAN is detected using at least one of a neighbor cell list in the first RAN, a database in the UE, Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the second RAN and measurements performed on the second RAN, and

wherein the database stores System Information Blocks (SIBs), and the SIB values is obtained from the second RAN on which UE is connected initially.

35. The UE of claim 27, wherein the processor starts a timer with the predefined time interval when the processor detects the second RAN and releases the radio connection with the GERAN.
