Abstract

An embodiment of an eye-mountable device includes an optical lens; an accommodation actuator to provide vision accommodation for the optical lens; a controller including an accommodation logic to select one of a plurality of vision accommodation states for the device, the plurality of vision accommodation states including at least a failsafe focal distance; and a failsafe subsystem including a system health detector, the system health detector to monitor for one or more operational indicators for the device, wherein the failsafe subsystem is to cause the device to transition to a failsafe mode upon the failsafe subsystem identifying a failure condition for the device, the failsafe mode includes setting the vision accommodation state to be the failsafe focal distance.

Claims

1. An eye-mountable device, comprising:

an optical lens;

an accommodation actuator to provide vision accommodation for the optical lens;

a controller including an accommodation logic to select one of a plurality of vision accommodation states for the device, the plurality of vision accommodation states including at least a failsafe focal distance; and

a failsafe subsystem including a system health detector, the system health detector to monitor one or more operational indicators for the device;

wherein the failsafe subsystem is to cause the device to transition to a failsafe mode upon the failsafe subsystem identifying a failure condition for the device, wherein the failsafe mode includes setting the vision accommodation state to be the failsafe focal distance.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the failsafe focal distance is a far field state.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring sensor values, and wherein a failure condition is detected if one or more sensor values from each of one or more sensors over a period of time are outside of a good range for each of the one or more sensors.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring vision accommodation results for the device, wherein a failure condition is detected if vision accommodation results are incorrect.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring for electrical or power issues, and wherein a failure condition is detected if one or more electrical or power properties for the device are outside of good ranges.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the failsafe subsystem includes logic to monitor for a timeout condition, the failsafe subsystem to transition the device to the failsafe mode upon determining that a timeout condition has occurred.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the failsafe subsystem includes a failsafe command logic to receive a failsafe command for the device, the failsafe subsystem to transition the device to the failsafe mode upon receiving a failsafe command.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the failsafe subsystem includes an initialization logic to cause the vision accommodation state to be set at the failsafe focal distance upon initialization or reset of the device.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein a default state for the optical lens is the failsafe focal distance, the optical lens to transition to the failsafe focal distance upon a power loss for the device.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the failsafe subsystem is to override the accommodation logic in the failsafe mode.

11. A method of providing a failsafe operation for eye-mountable device, comprising:

providing vision accommodation for an optical lens, including selecting one of a plurality of vision accommodation states for the device;

monitoring one or more operational indicators for the device; and

upon detecting a failure condition for the device, transitioning the device to a failsafe mode, the failsafe mode including establishing a failsafe focal distance for the vision accommodation state.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the failsafe focal distance is a far field state.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring sensor values, and further comprising detecting a failure condition if one or more sensor values are outside of a good range for the sensor.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring vision accommodation results for the device, and further comprising detecting a failure condition if vision accommodation results are incorrect.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the monitoring of one or more operational indicators includes monitoring for electrical or power issues, and wherein a failure condition is detected if one or more electrical or power properties for the device are outside of good ranges.

16. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

monitoring for occurrence of timeout conditions for the device; and

upon determining that a timeout condition has occurred, the failsafe subsystem transitioning the device to the failsafe mode.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

monitoring for receipt of failsafe commands; and

upon receiving a failsafe command, the failsafe subsystem transitioning the device to the failsafe mode.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

initializing or resetting the device;

setting the vision accommodation state to the failsafe focal distance;

performing a health check for the device; and

upon successfully completing the health check, proceeding to the vision accommodation for the optical lens.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein a default state for the optical lens is the failsafe focal distance, the optical lens to transition to the failsafe focal distance upon a power loss for the device.

20. The method of claim 11, further comprising the failsafe subsystem overriding the accommodation logic in the failsafe mode.

21. A failsafe subsystem for a smart contact lens comprising:

a system health detector for the smart contact lens, wherein the system health detector is to monitor one or more operation indicators for the smart contact lens;

wherein, upon detecting a failure condition for the smart contact lens, the failsafe subsystem is to transition the smart contact lens to a failsafe mode; and

wherein transitioning to the failsafe mode includes establishing a failsafe focal distance accommodation state for the smart contact lens.

22. The failsafe subsystem of claim 21, further comprising:

a failsafe command logic to receive failsafe commands;

wherein, upon the receipt of a failsafe command by the failsafe command logic, the failsafe subsystem is to transition the smart contact lens to the failsafe mode.

23. The failsafe subsystem of claim 21, further comprising:

an initialization logic to lock the smart contact lens into the failsafe focal distance accommodation state upon initialization or reset of the smart contact lens.

24. An eye-mountable device comprising:

an optical lens;

an accommodation actuator to provide automatic vision accommodation for the optical lens; and

a failsafe subsystem for the device;

wherein the failsafe subsystem includes one or more features of the optical lens to cause the optical lens to default to a failsafe focal distance when no power or voltage is applied to such optical lens.

25. The eye-mountable device of claim 24, wherein the failsafe focal distance is a resting state of the optical lens.

26. The eye-mountable device of claim 24, wherein the failsafe focal distance is a far field state.
