Abstract

Techniques for managing intra-affiliation and inter-affiliation postings are described. Disclosed are techniques for receiving a posting from an account, the account being associated with an affiliation and an account parameter, transmitting one or more affiliation-specific parameters associated with the affiliation to the account, receiving a posting parameter from the account, the posting parameter being selected from one or more affiliation-specific parameters, determining a level of relevancy of the posting to a receiving account based on the posting parameter, the account parameter, and a receiving account parameter, the receiving account being associated with the receiving account parameter, generating an order of postings based on the level of relevancy, and transmitting the order of postings to the receiving account. One or more postings may be displayed at the receiving account based on the order.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a posting from an account, the account being associated with an affiliation and an account parameter;

transmitting a plurality of affiliation-specific parameters associated with the affiliation to the account;

receiving a posting parameter from the account, the posting parameter being selected from the plurality of affiliation-specific parameters;

determining a level of relevancy of the posting to a receiving account based on the posting parameter, the account parameter, and a receiving account parameter, the receiving account being associated with the receiving account parameter;

generating an order of a plurality of postings including the posting based on the level of relevancy; and

transmitting the order of the plurality of postings to the receiving account.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the account parameter is associated with one of a user characteristic and an account activity.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of affiliation-specific parameters comprises one of a course, a professor, and a subject area.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the level of relevancy as a function of a level of association between the receiving account and the receiving account parameter.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the receiving account parameter is associated with a course, and the level of association is associated with one of currently taking the course, having taken the course, and interested in the course.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

comparing the posting parameter to the receiving account parameter to determine a weight;

comparing the account parameter to the receiving account parameter to determine another weight; and

determining the level of relevancy using the weight and the another weight.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

mapping the posting parameter to an intermediate parameter;

mapping the receiving account parameter to another intermediate parameter, the receiving account parameter being selected from another plurality of affiliation-specific parameters associated with another affiliation; and

determining the level of relevancy as a function of a match between the intermediate parameter and the another intermediate parameter.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying a mapping between the posting parameter and an intermediate parameter stored in a table;

identifying a level of confidence associated with the mapping, the level of confidence being stored in the table;

identifying another mapping between the receiving account parameter and the intermediate parameter stored in the table, the receiving account parameter being selected from another plurality of affiliation-specific parameter associated with another affiliation;

identifying another level of confidence associated with the another mapping, the another level of confidence being stored in the table; and

determining the level of relevancy as a function of the level of confidence and the another level of confidence.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving data indicating an association between the posting parameter and the intermediate parameter from the account; and

adjusting the level of confidence stored in the table.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

determining the level of confidence is below a threshold; and

transmitting a request to verify an association between the posting parameter and the intermediate parameter to the account.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

determining the level of relevancy as a function of the level of confidence.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

generating the table based on a comparison between the plurality of affiliation-specific parameters and the another plurality of affiliation-specific parameters.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying the plurality of postings based on the order at a client.

14. A method, comprising:

receiving an email address from a client;

transmitting an email message to the email address, the email message including data configured to authenticate the email address;

referencing at least a portion of the email address against a library to identify an affiliation associated with the email address;

identifying one or more affiliation-specific parameters associated with the affiliation; and

transmitting the one or more affiliation-specific parameters to the client.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

transmitting a request to select an affiliation-specific parameter from the one or more affiliation-specific parameters to the client;

receiving a selected affiliation-specific parameter from the client; and

storing the selected affiliation-specific parameter as a user characteristic associated with an account.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining a level of relevancy of a posting based on the affiliation; and

displaying the posting based on the level of relevancy at the client.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the affiliation is associated with a school.

18. A method, comprising:

receiving a posting from an account, the account being associated with a plurality of identification tags and being associated with an account parameter selected from a plurality of affiliation-specific parameters;

determining a posting type associated with the posting, the posting type being associated with transmitting a request to select of an identification tag from at least a subset of the plurality of identification tags to the account;

transmitting the request to the account;

receiving a selected identification tag from the account; and

transmitting the posting, the selected identification tag, and the account parameter to another account.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising:

the posting type being associated with responding to another posting received from the another account.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the plurality of identification tags comprises a name and a pseudonym.
