Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments for automatically selecting alert modes for a mobile device based at least in part on the mobile device location. In one embodiment, a velocity of the mobile device is determined. If the velocity exceeds a threshold, the mobile device refrains from automatically configuring a notification of the mobile device to use a location-dependent alert mode.

Claims

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying a program executable in a mobile device, wherein when executed the program causes the mobile device to at least:

determine a velocity of the mobile device;

determine that the velocity exceeds a threshold; and

refrain from automatically configuring a notification of the mobile device to use a location-dependent alert mode in response to determining that the velocity exceeds the threshold.

2. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein when executed the program further causes the mobile device to at least:

determine an updated velocity of the mobile device;

determine that the updated velocity is below the threshold; and

automatically configure the notification of the mobile device to use the location-dependent alert mode in response to determining that the updated velocity is below the threshold.

3. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein when executed the program further causes the mobile device to at least:

determine a location of the mobile device;

obtain a map feature classification of the location from a server; and

select the location-dependent alert mode based at least in part on the map feature classification of the location.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 3, wherein when executed the program further causes the mobile device to at least select the location-dependent alert mode further based at least in part on a user-configurable rule that associates the map feature classification with the location-dependent alert mode.

5. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein when executed the program further causes the mobile device to at least:

determine, via an accelerator of the mobile device, that the mobile device has been moved; and

determine a location of the mobile device in response to determining that the mobile device has been moved.

6. A system, comprising:

at least one computing device; and

at least one application executed in the at least one computing device, the at least one application when executed causing the at least one computing device to at least;

determine a velocity of a mobile device;

determine that the velocity is below a threshold; and

automatically configure a notification of the mobile device to use a location-dependent alert mode in response to determining that the velocity is below the threshold.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein when executed the at least one application further causes the at least one computing device to at least:

determine an updated velocity of the mobile device;

determine that the updated velocity exceeds the threshold; and

refrain from automatically configuring the notification of the mobile device to use another location-dependent alert mode in response to determining that the updated velocity exceeds the threshold.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein when executed the at least one application further causes the at least one computing device to at least:

determine a location of the mobile device;

determine a classification of the location based at least in part on mapping data that identifies a feature at the location; and

select the location-dependent alert mode based at least in part on the classification of the location.

The system of claim 8, wherein when executed the at least one application further causes the at least one computing device to at least select the location-dependent alert mode further based at least in part on a user-configurable rule that associates the location-dependent alert mode with the classification.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein when executed the at least one application further causes the at least one computing device to at least select the location-dependent alert mode further based at least in part on alert mode history data that indicates which of a plurality of alert modes were previously used by a plurality of users in a plurality of locations associated with the classification.

11. The system of claim 6, wherein the notification comprises at least one of:

an incoming call notification, an incoming text message notification, an incoming email notification, or an incoming social network notification.

12. The system of claim 6, wherein the location-dependent alert mode activates a vibration device of the mobile device in lieu of activating a sound device of the mobile device.

13. The system of claim 6, wherein the location-dependent alert mode increases a volume of a sound alert as compared to a previously configured alert mode for the notification in the mobile device.

14. A method, comprising:

receiving, via at least one computing device, a user specification of a rule that associates an alert mode with a map feature classification;

determining, via the at least one computing device, a current location of a mobile device;

determining, via the at least one computing device, that the map feature classification applies to the current location;

identifying, via the at least one computing device, the alert mode according to the map feature classification and the rule; and

automatically configuring, via the at least one computing device, a notification of the mobile device to use the alert mode.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

receiving, via the at least one computing device, an event corresponding to the notification; and

wherein the current location of the mobile device is determined in response to receiving the event.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining, via the at least one computing device, a duration associated with the map feature classification;

determining, via the at least one computing device, that a current time exceeds the duration; and

automatically configuring, via the at least one computing device, the notification of the mobile device to revert to a previously configured alert mode.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining, via the at least one computing device, a current velocity of the mobile device;

determining, via the at least one computing device, that the current velocity is below a threshold; and

automatically configuring, via the at least one computing device, the notification of the mobile device to use the alert mode further in response to determining that the current velocity is below the threshold.

18. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

determining, via the at least one computing device, an updated location of the mobile device;

determining, via the at least one computing device, that the map feature classification does not apply to the updated location;

identifying, via the at least one computing device, a default alert mode for the notification; and

automatically configuring, via the at least one computing device, the notification of the mobile device to use the default alert mode.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein determining the current location of the mobile device further comprises determining, via the at least one computing device, a current altitude of the mobile device.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the alert mode corresponds to an increased sound alert as compared to a previously configured alert mode of the mobile device.
