Abstract

Disclosed herein is a sample recovery and collection device comprising a tube, a cap, an insert, and an opening. The cap includes an O-ring and is removably secured to the tube for sealing the tube. The insert includes a first end having a ring that is adhered to the tube and second end opposite the first end. The insert also includes a first leg, a second leg, and a third leg, each coupled to and extending from the ring to the second end. The opening extends from the ring to the second end and the insert defines a diameter. Also disclosed herein is a kit comprising the sample recovery and collection device. Further disclosed herein is a method of collecting a sample from a subject.

19. A sample recovery and collection device comprising:

a tube;

a cap including an O-ring, the cap removably secured to the tube for sealing the tube;

an insert including a first end having a ring that is adhered to the tube and a second end opposite the first end, the insert including a first leg, a second leg, and a third leg each coupled to and extending from the ring to the second end; and

an opening extending from the ring to the second end, the insert defining a diameter,

wherein each of the first, second and third legs includes a plurality of concentric protrusions that project radially from an inside surface of each of the legs and that extend continuously between openings flanking each of the legs.

20. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, further comprising a solution enclosed within the tube.

21. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, wherein the opening of the insert is configured to receive a swab and apply pressure to a tip of the swab.

22. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 21, wherein the pressure exerted on the tip of the swab causes a sample carried by the swab tip to be squeezed into the tube to mix with a solution enclosed within the tube.

23. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, wherein the diameter is widest near the first end of the insert and the diameter is narrowest at the second end.

24. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, further comprising a box holder and box, the box holder configured to receive and secure the device within the box.

25. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, wherein the tube includes a tapered opening.

26. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, wherein in a first position, a swab is absent from the opening of the insert, and in a second position, the swab is received by the opening of the insert.

27. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 26, wherein the first leg, second leg, and third leg are spaced apart by one or more openings in both the first position and the second position.

28. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 19, wherein the device defines a longitudinal axis and wherein the plurality of concentric protrusions are spaced apart along the longitudinal axis.

37. A kit comprising the sample recovery and collection device of claim 19.

38. The kit of claim 37, further comprising one or more swabs.

29. A sample recovery and collection device comprising:

a tube including a tapered channel, wherein the tapered channel includes a plurality of concentric protrusions that extend continuously between adjacent openings in the channel;

a solution enclosed within the tube; and

a cap including an O-ring, the cap removably secured to the tube for sealing the tube.

30. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 29, wherein the tapered channel is configured to receive a swab and apply pressure to a tip of the swab.

31. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 30, wherein the pressure exerted on the tip of the swab causes a sample carried by the swab tip to be squeezed into the tube to mix with the solution.

32. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 30, wherein the tapered channel is defined by a first leg, a second leg, and a third leg, each of the legs spaced apart from an inner wall of the tube.

33. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 32, wherein each of the legs is substantially conically shaped.

34. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 32, wherein in a first position, the swab is absent from the tapered channel of the tube, and in a second position, the swab is received by the tapered channel of the tube.

35. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 34, wherein the first leg, second leg, and third leg are spaced apart by one or more openings in both the first position and the second position.

36. The sample recovery and collection device of claim 29, wherein the device defines a longitudinal axis and wherein the plurality of concentric protrusions are spaced apart along the longitudinal axis.
