Abstract

A system and method for supporting configuration of dynamic clusters in an application server environment. The method can begin with providing, at one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon, a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment, and one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain, wherein the system can associate one or more partitions with a tenant, for use by the tenant. The method can further provide a dynamic cluster for use by the one or more partitions, the dynamic cluster comprising an initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster. The method can then receive, at an administration server to receive, a command; and then configure, via an API, the dynamic cluster.

Claims

1. A system for supporting configuration of dynamic clusters in an application server environment, comprising:

one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon, together with

a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment, and

one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain;

an administration server, the administration server comprising a server template, the administration server being configured to receive a command;

a dynamic cluster for use by the one or more partitions, the dynamic cluster comprising an initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster, and

an API used to configure the dynamic cluster.

The system of claim 1, wherein the received command includes a command to scale up the dynamic cluster, the command including an instruction to start a specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, such that a total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster is equal to the sum of the initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster and the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

The system of claim 2, wherein the API, in response to the administration server receiving the command to scale up the dynamic cluster, compares the total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster to a dynamic cluster configuration, the dynamic cluster configuration comprising a maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the API, in response the total number of servers within the dynamic cluster being less than or equal to the maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster, starts the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

The system of claim 3, wherein the API, in response to the total number of servers within the dynamic cluster being greater than the maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster, edits the dynamic cluster configuration and starts the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, the servers started being taken from at least a pool of non-running servers.

6. The system of claim 5, where in the API, in response to the specified number of servers running within the dynamic cluster is less than a number of servers within the pool of non-running servers, creates a server using the server template.

The system of claim 1, wherein the received command includes a command to scale down the dynamic cluster, the command including an instruction to shut down a specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, such that a total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster is equal to the difference between the initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster and the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the API, in response to the total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster being a positive integer, shuts down the specified number of servers running within the dynamic cluster.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the application server environment comprises a multi-tenant application server environment, and wherein the system can associate the one or more partitions with a tenant, for use by the tenant.

10. A method for supporting configuration of dynamic clusters in an application server environment, comprising:

providing, at one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon,

a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment, and

one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain;

providing a dynamic cluster for use by the one or more partitions, the dynamic cluster comprising an initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster,

receiving, at an administration server to receive, a command; and

configuring, via an API, the dynamic cluster.

The method of claim 10, wherein the received command includes a command to scale up the dynamic cluster, the command including an instruction to start a specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, such that a total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster is equal to the sum of the initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster and the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the configuring, via the API, in response to the administration server receiving the command to scale up the dynamic cluster, comprises:

comparing the total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster to a dynamic cluster configuration, the dynamic cluster configuration comprising a maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster.

13. The method of claim 12, the configuring further comprising:

in response the total number of servers within the dynamic cluster being less than or equal to the maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster, starting the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

14. The method of claim 12, the configuring further comprising:

in response to the total number of servers within the dynamic cluster being greater than the maximum number of servers running within the dynamic cluster;

editing the dynamic cluster configuration; and

starting the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, the servers started being taken from at least a pool of non-running servers.

15. The method of claim 14, the configuring further comprising:

in response to the specified number of servers running within the dynamic cluster being less than a number of servers within the pool of non-running servers, creating a server using the server template.

The method of claim 10, wherein the received command includes a command to scale down the dynamic cluster, the command including an instruction to shut down a specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, such that a total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster is equal to the difference between the initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster and the specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the configuring, via an API, the dynamic cluster comprises:

In response to the total number of servers running within the dynamic cluster being a positive integer, shutting down the specified number of servers running within the dynamic cluster.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the API is a WebLogicScriptingTool API.

19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, including instructions stored thereon which when read and executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform the steps comprising:

providing, at one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon,

a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment, and

one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain;

providing a dynamic cluster for use by the one or more partitions, the dynamic cluster comprising an initial number of servers running within the dynamic cluster,

receiving, at an administration server to receive, a command; and

configuring, via an API, the dynamic cluster.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19, wherein the received command includes a command from the group consisting of scale up the dynamic cluster and scale down the dynamic cluster, wherein the command to scale up the dynamic cluster includes an instruction to start a specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster, and the command to scale down the dynamic cluster includes an instruction to shut down another specified number of servers within the dynamic cluster.
