Abstract

In accordance with an embodiment, a system and method for supporting RESTful management in an application server environment for operating application software includes an interface configured to receive input for interacting with the application server environment. When a request to manage the application server environment is received, REST resources are dynamically generated using bean trees and other bean information within the application server environment. The REST resources are then usable as input to the interface to manage the application server environment.

Claims

1. A system for supporting RESTful management in an application server environment, comprising:

one or more computers, including the application server environment executing thereon, together with a plurality of deployable resources usable within the application server environment; and

an interface configured to receive input for interacting with the application server environment,

wherein when a request to manage the application server environment is received, REST resources are dynamically generated using bean trees and other bean information within the application server environment, and

wherein the dynamically generated REST resources are usable as input to the interface to manage the application server environment.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the application server environment is a cloud environment.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the REST resources are dynamically generated based on a role requesting to manage the application server environment.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

one or more partitions defined within the application server environment, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain,

wherein where a role is limited to a partition from the one or more partitions, the REST resources dynamically generated are limited to managing the partition.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured to dynamically describe a tree of beans that is returned in one call in response to a bulk access query.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

an extension mechanism configured to weave hand-coded REST resources and customization into trees of the dynamically generated REST resources.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the application server environment includes an administration server and a plurality of managed servers;

wherein when the REST resources are used as input to the interface to manage the application server environment, the interface interacts with the administration server; and

wherein when the administration server is unavailable, the REST resources are usable to directly interact with a managed server from the plurality of manager servers.

8. A method for supporting RESTful management in an application server environment, comprising:

providing, at one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon, a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment;

providing an interface configured to receive input for interacting with the application server environment;

dynamically generating, upon receiving a request to manage the application server environment, REST resources using bean trees and other bean information within the application server environment; and

providing access to the REST resources, via the interface, to manage the application server environment.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the application server environment is a cloud environment.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

providing one or more resource group templates within the application server environment, wherein each resource group template defines a grouping of the plurality of deployable resources within a domain of the application server environment, and

wherein each resource group template includes one or more related applications together with resources upon which those applications depend, and

wherein the REST resources are usable as input to the interface to manage the one or more related applications.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the REST resources are dynamically generated based on a role requesting to manage the application server environment.

12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

providing one or more partitions defined within the application server environment, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of the domain,

wherein where a role is limited to a partition from the one or more partitions, the REST resources dynamically generated are limited to managing the partition.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving a bulk access query at the interface; and

dynamically describe a tree of beans that is returned in one call in response to receiving the bulk access query.

14. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

weaving hand-coded REST resources and customization into trees of the dynamically generated REST resources.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein the application server environment includes an administration server and a plurality of managed servers;

wherein when the REST resources are used as input to the interface to manage the application server environment, the interface interacts with the administration server; and

wherein when the administration server is unavailable, the REST resources are usable to directly interact with a managed server from the plurality of manager servers.

16. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium, including instructions stored thereon which when read and executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to perform the steps comprising:

providing, at one or more computers, including an application server environment executing thereon, a plurality of deployable resources which can be used within the application server environment;

providing an interface configured to receive input for interacting with the application server environment;

dynamically generating, upon receiving a request to manage the application server environment, REST resources using bean trees and other bean information within the application server environment; and

providing access to the REST resources, via the interface, to manage the application server environment.
