1. A surgical instrument for cutting and stapling tissue, wherein the surgical instrument comprises:

  • a handle comprising;

    an electric motor; and

    a control system for controlling said electric motor, said control system comprising;

    a battery operably coupleable to said electric motor, said battery configured to supply pulses to said electric motor; and

    a pulse width modulation circuit operably coupleable to said battery, said pulse width modulation circuit configured to control the duration of pulses supplied from said battery to said electric motor;

    a shaft extending from said handle; and

    an end effector extending from said shaft, said end effector comprising;

    a plurality of staples for stapling tissue; and

    a cutting element for cutting tissue, said cutting element configured to move at least partially through said end effector during a firing stroke, said electric motor configured to drive said cutting element with an applied power during the firing stroke, wherein the applied power applied to said cutting element is optimized by said pulse width modulation circuit.
