Abstract

An embodiment of the present invention provides for an elongated medical device with a hypotube backbone running through the device, and a spiral lumen spiraled around the backbone along the length of the backbone. The backbone may be formed from a nitinol alloy for increased bendability without compromising axial stiffness. The device may also incorporate a jacket around the hypotube and spiral lumen formed using either melting, molding, bonding, or casting. The spiral lumen may be configured to accommodate a variety of uses, including actuation members (e.g., pull wires), tools, and means for aspiration, irrigation, image capture, and illumination. Additionally, the present invention provides a method for constructing an elongated medical device with a hypotube backbone running through the device, and a spiral lumen spiraled around the backbone along the length of the backbone.

Claims

1. An elongated medical device comprising:

a hypotube backbone running through the device; and

a spiral lumen spiraled around the backbone along the length of the backbone.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the backbone is formed from a nitinol alloy.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the backbone is configured to provide axial stiffness along the length of the device.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the backbone provides a central lumen that runs the length of the device.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the central lumen is configured to deliver a central payload from the proximal end of the device to the distal end.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the central payload comprises at least one of laser fibers, microsurgical tools, imaging means, irrigation means, and aspiration means.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the spiral lumen is configured to deliver a spiral payload from the proximal end of the device to the distal end.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the spiral payload comprises at least one of laser fibers, microsurgical tools, imaging means, irrigation means, and aspiration means.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the inside diameter of the spiral lumen is smaller than the inside diameter of the central lumen.

10. The device of claim 1, further comprising a jacket around the hypotube and spiral lumen.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the jacket is formed using methods of at least one of melting, molding, bonding, and casting.

12. An endoscopic method comprising

providing an elongated medical device comprising:

a hypotube backbone running along the length of the device; and

a spiral lumen spiraled around the backbone along the length of the device.

directing the device into an anatomical lumen; and

positioning the device at a desired operative region through the anatomical lumen.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the backbone is formed from a nitinol alloy.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the backbone is configured to provide axial stiffness along the length of the device.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the backbone provides a central lumen that runs along the length of the device.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the central lumen is configured to deliver a central payload from the proximal end of the device to the distal end.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the central payload comprises at least one of laser fibers, micro surgical tools, imaging means, irrigation means, and aspiration means.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the spiral lumen is configured to deliver a spiral payload from the proximal end of the device to the distal end.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the spiral payload comprises at least one of laser fibers, microsurgical tools, imaging means, irrigation means, and aspiration means.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein a jacket surrounds the hypotube and spiral lumen.
