VEHICLE STATUS NOTIFICATION AND OPERATOR IDENTIFICATION
First Claim
1. A method performed by a computing device located on-board a vehicle and physically interfacing with an on-board vehicle control system of the vehicle via a wired communications link, the method comprising:
- detecting a motion event or an auditory event via one or more sensors of the computing device;
responsive to detecting the motion event or the auditory event, waking a wireless transceiver of the computing device from a sleep state or a reduced power state, and initiating scanning via the wireless transceiver;
detecting whether a wireless device of a primary registered user of the computing device and/or vehicle is present within a wireless range of the wireless transceiver based on wireless transmissions received via the wireless transceiver during said scanning;
if the wireless device of the primary registered user is not detected as being present, then transmitting a notification message over a wireless wide area network directed to a registered contact address of the primary registered user;
if the wireless device of the primary registered user is detected as being present, then associating data obtained from the on-board vehicle control system of the vehicle with a user account of the primary registered user during operation of the vehicle.

Abstract
A computing system located on-board a vehicle issues an event notification responsive to detection of an event condition. The on-board computing system detects the presence of wireless-enabled devices located within the vehicle or within proximity to the vehicle over a wireless communications link. The on-board computing system seeks to determine the identity of one or more persons that enter, attempt to enter, or operate the vehicle based on identifiers obtained from one or more wireless-enabled devices carried by those persons. The on-board computing system distinguishes multiple users from each other by designating one user as the vehicle operator, and one or more other users as passengers of the vehicle. The on-board computing system may include a removable on-board interface device that interfaces with an on-board vehicle control system.

11. A computing system located on-board a vehicle that includes an on-board vehicle control system or physically interfaces with the on-board vehicle control system of the vehicle via a wired communications link, the computing system comprising:

one or more sensors to detect motion and/or auditory events; a communications subsystem to communicate with wireless devices via a local area network or a personal area network; a logic subsystem to execute instructions; a storage subsystem having instructions stored thereon executable by the logic subsystem to; detect a motion event or an auditory event via the one or more sensors; responsive to detecting the motion event or the auditory event, wake a wireless transceiver of communications subsystem from a sleep state or a reduced power state; scan for wireless devices via the wireless transceiver following waking of the wireless transceiver; detect whether a wireless device of a primary registered user of the computing device and/or vehicle is present within a wireless range of the wireless transceiver based on an identifier contained within the wireless transmissions received via the wireless transceiver during the scan by comparing identifiers contained within the wireless transmissions to a pre-defined set of registered identifiers to determine whether the identifier of the primary registered user is present; if the wireless device of the primary registered user is not detected as being present, then transmit a notification message over a wireless wide area network directed to a registered contact address of the primary registered user; if the wireless device of the primary registered user is detected as being present, then associate data obtained from the on-board vehicle control system of the vehicle with a user account of the primary registered user during operation of the vehicle. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19)

20. A server system, comprising:
one or more server devices configured to; receive one or more reporting messages over a wide area network originating from and transmitted by a computing system located on-board a vehicle that includes or interfaces with an on-board vehicle control system of the vehicle, the one or more reporting messages including or indicating; a first identifier of a first wireless device wirelessly detected by the computing system via a wireless local area network or a first wireless personal area network, and a second identifier of a second wireless device wirelessly detected by the computing system as being present contemporaneously with the first wireless device via the wireless local area network or a second wireless personal area network; and responsive to receiving the one or more reporting messages, transmit a vehicle operator status request message to at least one of the first wireless device and/or the second wireless device, the vehicle operator status request message respectively directing the first wireless device and/or the second wireless device to initiate a prompt for a user to provide an indication of an operator of the vehicle.
