Abstract

Suggested is a antimicrobial agent An antimicrobial composition comprising (a) at least one acetophenone derivative of formula (I) in which R₁ stands for hydrogen or methyl, and R₂ stands for hydrogen, hydroxyl or a —OCH₃ group, or a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and (b) at least one second antimicrobial agent.

Claims

1. An antimicrobial composition comprising

(a) at least one acetophenone derivative of formula (I)

2. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1, wherein the acetophenone derivatives are selected from the group consisting of

3. The composition of claim 2 comprising or consisting of two or three of the compounds (Ia), (Ib) and (Ic).

4. A personal care composition comprising a working amount of the antimicrobial composition of claim 1.

5. A detergent composition comprising a working amount of the antimicrobial composition of claim 1.

6. A food composition comprising a working amount the antimicrobial composition of claim 1.

7. The personal care composition of claim 4, containing the antimicrobial composition in amounts of about 0.01 to about 10% b.w.—

calculated on the total composition.

8. A method for preserving a personal care composition, a detergent composition or a food composition, comprising the step of adding a working amount of the antimicrobial composition of claim 1 to the composition.

9. A method for fighting micro-organisms, comprising the step of adding a working amount of the antimicrobial composition of claim 1 to a personal care, detergent or food composition.

10. A method for fighting unwanted body odour, comprising the step of topically administering a working amount of the antimicrobial composition of claim 1 to human skin.

11. A preservative comprising the antimicrobial composition of claim 1.

12. A deodorant comprising the antimicrobial composition of claim 1.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the second antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of 1,3 propandiol, 3-heptoyl-2,2-propandiol, 1,2-hexandiol, 1,2 octandiol, phenoxyethanol, hexyl glycerin, heptylglycerin, octylglycerin, ethylhexyl glycerin, benzylglycerin and mixtures thereof.

The composition of claim 1, wherein the aminophenone derivative is 4-hydroxyacetophenone and the second antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of 1,3 propandiol, 3-heptoyl-2,2-propandiol, 1,2-hexandiol, 1,2 octandiol, phenoxyethanol, hexyl glycerin, heptylglycerin, octylglycerin, ethylhexyl glycerin, benzylglycerin and mixtures thereof.

15. The detergent composition of claim 5, containing the antimicrobial composition in amounts of about 0.01 to about 10% b.w.—

calculated on the total composition.

16. The food composition of claim 6, containing the antimicrobial composition in amounts of about 0.01 to about 10% b.w.—

calculated on the total composition.
