Abstract

Methods and systems for developing, modifying, and distributing software applications for enterprise systems are described herein. A software component, such as a native mobile application or a template application, may be modified into a managed mobile application, and metadata associated with the managed mobile application may be generated. The managed application and associated metadata may be provided to one or more application stores, such as public application stores and/or enterprise application stores. Managed applications and/or associated metadata may be retrieved by computing devices from public application stores and/or enterprise application stores, and may be executed as managed applications in an enterprise system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

modifying, by a computing system, a software component of an application available from a public application store to include logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within an application-management framework; and

provisioning, by the computing system, an enterprise application store associated with the application-management framework with the software component, including the logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within the application-management framework.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein modifying the software component comprises identifying, within a structure of the software component, an application program interface (API) call to an operating system (OS) on which the application is configured to execute.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein modifying the software component comprises, responsive to determining that the API call invokes a function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, inserting, into the structure, logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein modifying the software component comprises rebuilding the software component to include the API call and the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein modifying the software component comprises:

responsive to determining that the API call invokes the function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, prompting a user to input additional information regarding use of the function within the application-management framework; and

generating, based on the additional information, the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

The method of claim 3, wherein the function of the OS comprises at least one of cutting, copying, or pasting data to or from a clipboard of the OS, browsing to a specified uniform resource locator (URL), accessing geographical location information, camera data, or microphone data accessible to the OS, or composing an email or short messaging service (SMS) message.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein provisioning the enterprise application store with the software component comprises provisioning the enterprise application store with data identifying the application and the public application store.

8. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory comprising instructions that when executed by the at least one processor cause the system to;

modify a software component of an application available from a public application store to include logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within an application-management framework; and

provision an enterprise application store associated with the application-management framework with the software component, including the logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within the application-management framework.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to identify, within a structure of the software component, an application program interface (API) call to an operating system (OS) on which the application is configured to execute.

The system of claim 9, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to, responsive to determining that the API call invokes a function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, insert, into the structure, logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to rebuild the software component to include the API call and the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

responsive to determining that the API call invokes the function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, prompt a user to input additional information regarding use of the function within the application-management framework; and

generate, based on the additional information, the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

The system of claim 10, wherein the function of the OS comprises at least one of cutting, copying, or pasting data to or from a clipboard of the OS, browsing to a specified uniform resource locator (URL), accessing geographical location information, camera data, or microphone data accessible to the OS, or composing an email or short messaging service (SMS) message.

14. The system of claim 8, wherein the instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to provision the enterprise application store with data identifying the application and the public application store.

15. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media comprising instructions that when executed by one or more computers cause the one or more computers to:

modify a software component of an application available from a public application store to include logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within an application-management framework; and

provision an enterprise application store associated with the application-management framework with the software component, including the logic configured to control execution of the application when executed within the application-management framework.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to identify, within a structure of the software component, an application program interface (API) call to an operating system (OS) on which the application is configured to execute.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 16, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to, responsive to determining that the API call invokes a function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, insert, into the structure, logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to rebuild the software component to include the API call and the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

19. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to:

responsive to determining that the API call invokes the function of the OS configured to be controlled within the application-management framework, prompt a user to input additional information regarding use of the function within the application-management framework; and

generate, based on the additional information, the logic configured to enable the application-management framework to control invocation of the API call within the application-management framework.

20. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15, wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more computers, cause the one or more computers to provision the enterprise application store with data identifying the application and the public application store.
