Abstract

A portable therapeutic fluid delivery device and a method for delivering a therapeutic fluid into a body of a patient are provided. In one aspect the therapeutic fluid delivery device and the method can be implemented using at least one housing securable to the body of the patient, a reservoir coupled to the at least one housing, a therapeutic fluid dispensing mechanism, a memory component, a controller, at least one bolus delivery button configured to signal the controller to initiate the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient; and, an inadvertent initiation prevention mechanism adapted for preventing the patient from activating the at least one bolus delivery button.

Claims

1. A portable therapeutic fluid delivery device for delivering a therapeutic fluid into a body of a patient comprising:

a reservoir for containing the therapeutic fluid;

a dispensing mechanism for dispensing the therapeutic fluid from the reservoir toward the body of the patient;

a housing configured for securing to the body of the patient, the housing accommodating the reservoir and the dispensing mechanism;

a bolus delivery button configured to initiate the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient; and

a locking mechanism adapted for preventing the patient from inadvertently activating the bolus delivery button for the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient unless the locking mechanism is put in an unlocked position.

2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a second bolus delivery button, and the device is configured such that for the initiation of the bolus dosage delivery, the two buttons must be pressed simultaneously, thus ensuring that bolus delivery cannot be initiated unintentionally.

3. The device of claim 2 where the two bolus delivery buttons are located oppositely from each other on the lateral walls of the housing.

The device of claim 1 wherein the housing is configured to have an elongated depression provided with at least one horizontal track and one vertical track in each lateral wall of the depression, within which a slidable portion of the bolus delivery button comprising lateral projections can move, first vertically to reach the unlocked position, and then horizontally to provide the initiation of the delivery of the therapeutic fluid.

The device of claim 1 wherein the locking mechanism comprises tracks in lateral walls of a depression in the housing, the bolus delivery button comprising a slidable portion comprising lateral projections, oppositely positioned, which fit inside the tracks in the lateral walls of a depression in the housing, and can move along the tracks.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein the tracks are configured such that the slidable portion cannot be pressed downwardly into the housing of the device except when the slidable portion is at an end of the tracks.

The device of claim 1 further comprising a second bolus delivery button, each of the two bolus delivery buttons having a slidable portion, and each of the two bolus delivery buttons are provided with two springs, a first spring attached in one end to the bottom side of the slidable portion, inside a dedicated depression, and in the other end to the reusable part'"'"'s housing, and a second spring attached at one end to the bottom side of the slidable portion surrounding a protrusion, while its other end is not attached to any other component.

The device of claim 1 wherein the bolus delivery button comprises a protrusion on an inwardly facing side and the protrusion is configured to push a switch for the initiation of the delivery of the therapeutic fluid when the bolus delivery button is pressed inwardly and the locking mechanism is in the unlocked position.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the bolus delivery button is configured of a rigid plastic.

10. The device of claim 1 wherein the bolus delivery button comprises a rotatable portion, and the button is also provided with a torsion spring, wherein a coil portion of the torsion spring as well as a leg of the torsion spring are each embedded in the rotatable portion of the bolus button.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the housing is configured to have a dedicated depression which accommodates entirely therein the rotatable portion of the bolus delivery button.

12. The device of claim 10 wherein the rotatable portion is fixed to the housing by a hinge located in the depression.

13. The device of claim 10 wherein the rotatable portion of the bolus delivery button comprises an inwardly facing protrusion.

The device of claim 10 wherein the rotatable portion of the bolus delivery button comprises an inwardly facing protrusion, and the housing is configured to have a dedicated depression, and the device is configured such that when the patient pushes down the rotatable portion of the bolus delivery button, the inwardly facing protrusion pushes downwardly a resilient portion of the housing, the resilient portion having a protrusion extending inwardly, which pushes a switch for the initiation of the delivery of the therapeutic fluid.

15. A portable therapeutic fluid delivery device for delivering a therapeutic fluid into a body of a patient comprising:

a reservoir for containing the therapeutic fluid;

a dispensing mechanism for dispensing the therapeutic fluid from the reservoir toward the body of the patient;

a housing configured for securing to the body of the patient, the housing accommodating the reservoir and the dispensing mechanism;

a first bolus delivery button to initiate the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient;

a second bolus delivery button to initiate the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient; and

wherein the initiation of the bolus dosage delivery requires that the two buttons must be pressed simultaneously, thus ensuring that the bolus delivery cannot be initiated unintentionally.

The device of claim 15 further comprising a locking mechanism adapted for preventing the patient from inadvertently activating the first and the second bolus delivery button for the delivery of the therapeutic fluid into the body of the patient unless the locking mechanism is put in an unlocked position.

17. The device of claim 16 wherein the cradle unit comprises a dedicated fluid passage.

18. The device of claim 15 further comprising a cradle unit adherable to a skin of the patient.

19. The device of claim 15 wherein the dispensing mechanism comprises a syringe-type pumping mechanism.

20. The device of claim 15 wherein the dispensing mechanism comprises a plunger comprising a plunger rod.
