Abstract

Disclosed is a feature for a vehicle that enables taking precautionary actions in response to conditions on the road network around or ahead of the vehicle, in particular, an unusually narrow road width or lane width. A database that represents the road network is used to determine locations where an unusually narrow road width or lane width exists along roads. Then, precautionary action data is added to the database to indicate a location at which a precautionary action is to be taken about the location where the unusually narrow road width or lane width exists. A precautionary action system installed in a vehicle uses this database, or a database derived therefrom, in combination with a positioning system to determine when the vehicle is at a location that corresponds to the location of a precautionary action. When the vehicle is at such a location, a precautionary action is taken by a vehicle system as the vehicle is approaching a location where the unusually narrow road width or lane width exists.

Claims

1. A method for making an augmented version of a database that can be used as a component in a vehicle system that provides a precautionary action in a vehicle when the vehicle approaches a potentially hazardous location, the method comprising:

using data contained in a first version of a database comprising data representative of road sections and geographic features proximate thereto within a geographic region to identify, prior to the vehicle system having been provided with the component comprising the augmented version of the database, road sections located throughout the geographic region that have limited by geographic features proximate thereto to an unusually narrow road width or lane width;

forming the augmented version of the database by adding precautionary action data to the first version of the database in association with each road section identified as having an unusually narrow road width or lane width limited by geographic features proximate thereto to indicate locations at which a precautionary action is to be taken by the vehicle system when approaching those locations such that the vehicle system may determine whether or not to take a precautionary action upon approach to a location based solely on whether precautionary action data is associated with the location in the augmented version of the database; and

causing the vehicle system to take a precautionary action when approaching a location associated with precautionary action data in the augmented version of the database.

2. The method of claim 1 further wherein the road segment is determined to have a narrow road width by evaluating data associated with the geography around the road segment.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

continuing to select from the first version of the database data records that represent road segments to identify all locations of narrow roads throughout the geographic region.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

continuing to select from the first version of the database data records that represent road segments until all data records that represent road segments have been selected.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

compiling the augmented version of the database into a format suitable for use in a navigation system.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein road width or lane width is further determined to be less than a threshold.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the geographic features proximate to the unusually narrow road section comprise a bridge, a hillside or a mountain side.

8. A non-transitory computer readable-medium having stored thereon a database and a program, wherein the database includes data that represents a road network in a geographic region, wherein the database comprises:

data records that represent road segments that make up the road network;

data that indicates geographic features proximate to the road segments;

data, configured prior to installation of the database in a vehicle system, that indicates precautionary action locations, wherein a precautionary action location is associated with a location at which geographic features limit the amount of room for a road segment and therefore the road segment has an unusually narrow road width or lane width such that the vehicle system may determine whether or not to take a precautionary action upon approach to a location based solely on whether precautionary action data is associated with the location in the database; and

the program causes the vehicle system to take a precautionary action when the vehicle system approaches a location which is identified as a precautionary action location and is associated with the precautionary action data in the database.

9. The database of claim 8 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a location along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken by a vehicle system.

10. The database of claim 8 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a direction along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken.

11. The database of claim 8 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that refers to the actual location along the road of the unusually narrow road width or narrow lane width.

12. The database of claim 8 further comprising data that indicates permitted directions of travel along road segments, speed limits along road segments, classifications of road segments, and locations of road segments.

13. The database of claim 8 further comprising data that identifies speed limits along road segments.

14. The database of claim 8 wherein the narrow road width or narrow lane width is below a threshold.

15. The database of claim 8 wherein the geographic features proximate to the unusually narrow road comprises a bridge, a hillside or a mountain side.

16. A vehicle system comprising:

a database configured prior to installation in the vehicle system to contain data representing a geographic region in which a vehicle is being operated, wherein the data includes data that represents a road network comprising road sections located in the geographic region and geographic features proximate thereto and precautionary action data that indicates precautionary action locations associated with locations where geographic features limit the amount of room for a road such that the road has an unusually narrow road width or lane width t;

a positioning system that determines a current location of the vehicle relative to the data representing the road network in the geographic region; and

a precautionary action application responsive to the positioning system and the database that provides a precautionary action when the positioning system determines that the current location of the vehicle is approaching a location associated with precautionary action data.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a location along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken by a vehicle system.

18. The system of claim 16 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that indicates a direction along a road segment at which a precautionary action is to be taken.

19. The system of claim 16 wherein the precautionary action data further includes data that refers to the actual location of the unusually narrow road width or lane width.

20. The system of claim 16 wherein the narrow road width or narrow lane width is below a threshold.

21. The system of claim 16 wherein the geographic features proximate to the unusually narrow road comprises a bridge, a hillside or a mountain side.

22. A method for providing precautionary actions in a vehicle having a vehicle system including a processor, the method comprising:

accessing a database by the processor coupled therewith, the database having been configured prior to installation in the vehicle to comprise data that represents a road network comprising road sections located in the geographic region and precautionary action data that indicates precautionary action locations associated with locations where geographic features proximate to a road limit the amount of room for the road and therefore the road has an unusually narrow road width or lane width;

determining, by the processor, a current position of the vehicle relative to the road network represented by the database; and

upon determining, by the processor, that data representations of a part of the road network around the current position of the vehicle includes precautionary action data, taking, by the processor, a precautionary action as the vehicle is approaching a location associated with precautionary action data.

23. The method of claim 22 further comprising:

building an electronic horizon after accessing the database; and

using the electronic horizon to determine whether precautionary action data is included therein.

24. The method of claim 22 wherein the precautionary action is provided via a user interface of the vehicle.
