Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for determining a location area of a user using a mobile communication terminal in a geographical area covered by a mobile radio network. Antenna probabilities, corresponding to a plurality of antennas located in the geographical area, may be determined for a plurality of sub-areas of the geographical area. The antenna probabilities may be determined based on expected field strengths for the plurality of antennas in each of the plurality of sub-areas, and may indicate for each particular antenna, in each of the plurality of sub-areas, the probability that a mobile communication terminal uses that particular antenna when located in that sub-area. The location area for the user may be determined based on the antenna probabilities and determination of one or more antennas used by the mobile communication termination the user is using, without requiring measuring signal properties at the particular mobile communication terminal.

14. A method, comprising:

determining for a plurality of sub-areas of a geographical area covered by a mobile radio network, antenna probabilities for a plurality of antennas located in the geographical area, wherein;

the antenna probabilities are determined based on expected field strengths for the plurality of antennas in each of the plurality of sub-areas;

the antenna probabilities indicate for each particular antenna, in each of the plurality of sub-areas, the probability that a mobile communication terminal uses that particular antenna when located in that sub-area; and

determining a location area for a user using a particular mobile communication terminal in the geographical area, based on the antenna probabilities and determination of one or more antennas used by the particular mobile communication termination, and without requiring measuring signal properties at the particular mobile communication terminal.

15. The method of claim 14, comprising determining location probabilities for the plurality of sub-areas, wherein each location probability indicates a probability that a mobile communication terminal is located in the respective sub-area.

16. The method of claim 15, comprising determining the location area based on a polygon enveloping one or more of the plurality of sub-areas, each having at least a defined minimum location probability.

17. The method of claim 16, comprising determining based on the polygon at least one ellipse defining the location area.

18. The method of claim 17, comprising determining the at least one ellipse by:

defining a single ellipse around the polygon; and

assessing whether the single ellipse defines the location area based on one or more defining criteria.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the one or more defining criteria comprise a number of the probable sub-areas being lower than a defined maximum number of sub-areas, and a density of the probable sub-areas being higher than a defined minimum density.

20. The method of claim 18, comprising determining more than one ellipse for defining the location area when the single ellipse does not define the location area based on at least one of the one or more defining criteria.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein determining more than one ellipse comprises:

determining one or more sub-areas to be considered;

grouping the one or more sub-areas to be considered into one or more areas of connected sub-areas; and

determining an ellipse around each of the one or more areas of connected sub-areas.

22. The method of claim 21, comprising determining the sub-areas to be considered by selecting from the sub-areas with descending location probability those sub-areas which together make up at least a defined target probability.

23. The method of claim 17, comprising enlarging an ellipse defining the location area using one or more sub-areas closest to the ellipse, separated from the ellipse by an intermediate area with at least a defined minimum mean location probability.

24. A system, comprising:

one or more processors for use in a computer system associated with a mobile radio network, the one or more processors are operable to;

determine for a plurality of sub-areas of a geographical area covered by the mobile radio network, antenna probabilities for a plurality of antennas located in the geographical area, wherein;

the antenna probabilities are determined based on expected field strengths for the plurality of antennas in each of the plurality of sub-areas; and

the antenna probabilities indicate for each particular antenna, in each of the plurality of sub-areas, the probability that a mobile communication terminal uses that particular antenna when located in that sub-area; and

determine a location area for a user using a particular mobile communication terminal in the geographical area, based on the antenna probabilities and determination of one or more antennas used by the particular mobile communication termination, and without requiring measuring signal properties at the particular mobile communication terminal.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine location probabilities for the plurality of sub-areas, wherein each location probability indicates a probability that a mobile communication terminal is located in the respective sub-area.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine the location area based on a polygon enveloping one or more of the plurality of sub-areas, each having at least a defined minimum location probability.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine based on the polygon at least one ellipse defining the location area.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine the at least one ellipse by:

defining a single ellipse around the polygon; and

assessing whether the single ellipse defines the location area based on one or more defining criteria.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the one or more defining criteria comprise a number of the probable sub-areas being lower than a defined maximum number of sub-areas, and a density of the probable sub-areas being higher than a defined minimum density.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine more than one ellipse for defining the location area when the single ellipse does not define the location area based on at least one of the one or more defining criteria.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein determining more than one ellipse comprises:

determining one or more sub-areas to be considered;

grouping the one or more sub-areas to be considered into one or more areas of connected sub-areas; and

determining an ellipse around each of the one or more areas of connected sub-areas.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the one or more processors are operable to determine the sub-areas to be considered by selecting from the sub-areas with descending location probability those sub-areas which together make up at least a defined target probability.

33. The system of claim 27, wherein the one or more processors are operable to enlarge an ellipse defining the location area using one or more sub-areas closest to the ellipse, separated from the ellipse by an intermediate area with at least a defined minimum mean location probability.
