Abstract

An emergency communication system for use with a home network manager having one or more associated network elements. The system may comprise a processor that may communicate with at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements, a input interface that may receive a plurality of sequential inputs and/or a management interface that may enable a user to program a plurality of programmable responses to a number of the sequential inputs, wherein each programmable response may include a user-programmable action to be activated via at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and/or the associated network elements when, for example, the input interface receives the number of the sequential inputs, wherein when the input interface receives the number of the sequential inputs, the processor may communicate a corresponding user-programmed action to the at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and/or the associated network elements.

Claims

1. An emergency communication system for use with a home network manager having one or more associated network elements, the emergency communication system comprising:

a processor configurable to communicate with at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements;

an input interface configurable to receive a plurality of sequential inputs; and

a management interface configurable to enable a user to program a plurality of programmable responses to a number of the sequential inputs, wherein each programmable response includes a user-programmable action to be activated via at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and the associated network elements when the input interface receives the number of the sequential inputs,

wherein when the input interface receives the number of the sequential inputs, the processor communicates a corresponding user-programmed action to the at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and the associated network elements.

2. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 1, and further comprising a communication module configurable to communicate the user-programmable action to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

3. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the processor is further configurable to receive data indicative of an operating status of at least one of the home network manager, and the associated network elements.

4. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the home network manager includes a second interface configurable to enable the user to program the programmable responses.

5. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 1, and further comprising a plurality of external ports programmable through the management interface to be at least one of an input port and an output port.

6. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 5, wherein at least one of the plurality of external ports is coupled to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 1, and further comprising a timer to determine an amount of time that the input interface has been activated before the number of the sequential inputs is communicated to the at least one of the home network manager, and the associated network elements.

8. An emergency communication system comprising:

a plurality of associated network elements;

a home network manager, the home network manager has a management interface enabling a user to program a plurality of user-programmable actions to be activated via one or more of the home network manager and network elements in response to one or more conditions; and

a panic device having an input interface to receive a number of the sequential inputs, each of the sequential inputs corresponding to one of the one or more conditions, and a communication module configurable to communicate with at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements;

wherein when the input interface receives the number of sequential inputs, the communication module communicates the number of sequential inputs to the at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements to carry out one of the user-programmable actions.

9. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 8, and wherein the panic device further comprises a communication module configurable to communicate one of the user-programmable actions to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

10. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 8, and wherein the panic device further comprises a plurality of external ports programmable through the management interface to be at least one of an input port and an output port.

11. An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 10, wherein at least one of the plurality of external ports is coupled to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

An emergency communication system as claimed in claim 8, and wherein the panic device further comprises a timer configurable to determine an amount of time that the input interface has been activated before the number of sequential inputs is communicated to the at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

13. A method of activating an emergency communication system for use with a home network manager having one or more associated network elements, the emergency communication system having a processor, an input interface, and a management interface, the method comprising:

communicating via the processor between the emergency communication system and at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements;

receiving at the input interface a plurality of sequential inputs; and

receiving at the management interface a plurality of programmable responses to a number of the sequential inputs, wherein each programmable response includes a user-programmable action to be activated via at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and the associated network elements when the input interface receives the number of the sequential inputs; and

in response to the input interface receiving the number of the sequential inputs, communicating via the processor a corresponding user-programmed action to the at least one of the emergency communication system, the home network manager and the associated network elements.

14. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the emergency communication system has an antenna, the method further comprising communicating via the communication module the user-programmable action to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

15. A method as claimed in claim 13, further comprising receiving, via the processor, data indicative of an operating status of at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

16. A method as claimed in claim 13, wherein the home network manager includes a second interface, the method further comprising receiving from the user-programmable actions.

A method as claimed in claim 13, and wherein the emergency communication system has a plurality of external ports, the method further comprising receiving programming instructions through the management interface, and programming at least one of the external ports to be at least one of an input port and an output port based on the programming instructions.

18. A method as claimed in claim 17, wherein at least one of the external ports is coupled to at least one of the home network manager and the associated network elements.

A method as claimed in claim 13, and wherein the emergency communication system has a timer, the method comprising determining via the timer an amount of time that the input interface has been activated before communicating the number of the sequential inputs to the at least one of the home network manager, and one or more associated network elements.

20. A method as claimed in claim 13, further comprising receiving via the processor an update of software from the home network manager.
