Abstract

A total hemoglobin index system derives total hemoglobin (tHb) index value utilizing a depopulated emitter with an index set of LEDs. A patient fails a tHb index test if tHb measurements are trending down and/or tHb values fall below a predefined index threshold. If a patient fails the tHb index test, a high resolution sensor derives a specific tHb measurement utilizing a high resolution set of LEDs. The number of high resolution set LEDs is greater than the number of index set LEDs.

Claims

1. A total hemoglobin index system comprising:

an emitter;

a detector;

an attachment configured to dispose the emitter and the detector on opposite portions of a tissue site having pulsatile blood flow;

a sensor connector in electrical communications with the emitter and the detector;

a monitor in communications with the sensor connector so as to activate the emitter to illuminate the tissue site and to detect the illumination after attenuation by the pulsatile blood flow

the emitter having a minimum number of LED to allow the monitor to calculate a total hemoglobin trend and to minimize the cost of disposing of the LEDs after a single patient use.

2. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 1 wherein the emitter has a maximum four LEDs

3. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 2 wherein the LEDs are mounted on a three-lead common carrier.

4. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 3 wherein a first LED is connected between a first lead and a second lead of the common carrier.

5. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 4 wherein a second LED is connected between the first lead and the second lead in a polarity opposite of the first LED.

6. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 5 wherein a third LED is connected between the second lead and the third lead of the common carrier.

7. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 6 wherein a fourth LED is connected between the first lead and the third lead.

8. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 7 wherein the LEDs are activated by sequentially applying a voltage between any two of the three leads.

9. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 8 wherein the LEDs comprise 660 nm, 905 nm, 1170 nm and 1300 nm wavelengths.

10. The total hemoglobin index system according to claim 9 wherein the LEDs are mounted on a particular one of the three leads and wire bounded to a different particular one of the three leads.

11. A total hemoglobin index method comprising:

defining a minimal set of optical wavelengths to determine a total hemoglobin trend from illumination of a tissue site having pulsatile blood flow;

illuminating the tissue site with the minimal set of optical wavelengths;

receiving the illumination after attenuation by pulsatile blood flow within the tissue site; and

analyzing the detected illumination to calculate the total hemoglobin trend.

12. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 11 further comprising:

disposing a set of light emitting diodes (LEDs) within an emitter; and

matching the LED wavelengths to the optical wavelengths.

13. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 12 further comprising:

mounting the emitter within a tape assembly configured to removably attach the emitter to the tissue site;

mounting a detector within the tape assembly so as to position the emitter and the detector on opposite sides of the tissue site.

14. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 13 wherein disposing a set of LEDs comprises mechanically attaching and electrically connecting four LEDs to a three lead carrier.

15. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 14 wherein illuminating comprises sequentially transmitting 660 nm, 905 nm, 1170 nm and 1300 nm wavelengths into a fingernail portion of the tissue site.

16. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 15 wherein receiving further comprises:

detecting the wavelengths at a fingertip portion of the tissue site;

generating a sensor signal responsive to the detecting; and

transmitting the sensor signal to a sensor plug.

17. The total hemoglobin index method according to claim 16 receiving sensor signal at a monitor connector in communications with the sensor plug;

analyzing the sensor signal for a total hemoglobin trend; and

graphically showing the total hemoglobin trend on a monitor display.
