Abstract

In one embodiment, an electronic device to be worn on a user'"'"'s forearm includes a display and a set of one or more sensors that provide sensor data. In one aspect, a device may detect, using sensor data obtained from a set of sensors, that a first activity state of a user is active. The device may determine, while the first activity state is active, that the sensor data matches a watch check rule associated with the first activity state. Responsive to the detected match, the device may cause a change in visibility of the display.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a display;

a set of one or more sensors to provide sensor data generated during a first time period and a second time period;

a set of one or more processors coupled to the display and the set of sensors; and

a non-transitory machine readable storage medium coupled to the set of processors and having stored therein instructions, which when executed by the set of processors, cause the set of processors to;

determine that the sensor data generated during the first time period matches a watch check rule, wherein the watch check rule represents a pattern of motion that is indicative of a user checking the display of the apparatus,

based on the match between the sensor data generated during the first time period and the watch check rule, cause a change in visibility of the display and log accelerometer data present in the sensor data generated during the first time period,

determine that the sensor data generated during the second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond a threshold, and

based on the determination that the sensor data generated during the second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond the threshold, reverse the change in visibility of the display.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

detect, using the sensor data, that the user is performing a particular type of activity; and

enable the watch check rule based on the detection.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the change in visibility of the display is turning on the display.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display includes a back light, and the change in visibility of the display is turning on the back light.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the set of sensors to further provide sensor data generated during a third time period, and the instructions, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

calculate a metric from the sensor data generated during the third time period, wherein the change in visibility of the display includes displaying the metric.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the sensor data generated during the third time period includes accelerometer data, and the metric is a step count.

7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the metric is at least one of:

a time, a pace, a speed, a distance, a mile split, a heart rate, a clock, a step count, a floor count, an estimation of calories burned, and an active minute count.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the threshold is a threshold amount for a threshold number of samples.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the logged accelerometer data includes values along a first axis of motion and a second axis of motion.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the reversal of the change in visibility of the display is turning off the display.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the reversal of the change in visibility of the display is turning off a backlight of the display.

12. A non-transitory machine readable storage medium including instructions, which when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

determine that sensor data, generated during a first time period by a set of one or more sensors of a wearable electronic device, matches a watch check rule, wherein the watch check rule represents a pattern of motion that is indicative of a user checking a display of the wearable electronic device;

based on the match between the sensor data generated during the first time period and the watch check rule, cause a change in visibility of a display of the wearable electronic device and log accelerometer data present in the sensor data generated during the first time period,

determine that the sensor data generated during a second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond a threshold, and

based on the determination that the sensor data generated during the second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond the threshold, reverse the change in visibility of the display.

13. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12 including further instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the one or more processors to:

detect, using the sensor data, that the user is performing a particular type of activity; and

enable the watch check rule based on the detection.

14. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the change in visibility of the display is turning on the display.

15. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the display includes a back light, and the change in visibility of the display is turning on the back light.

16. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12 further comprises further instructions to cause, when executed, the one or more processors to:

obtain sensor data from the set of sensors generated during a third time period, wherein the instructions, which when executed, further cause the one or more processors to calculate a metric from the sensor data generated during the third time period, wherein the change in visibility of the display includes displaying the metric.

17. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the sensor data generated during the third time period includes accelerometer data, and the metric is a step count.

18. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 16, wherein the metric is at least one of:

a time, a pace, a speed, a distance, a mile split, a heart rate, a clock, a step count, a floor count, an estimation of calories burned, and an active minute count.

19. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the threshold is a threshold amount for a threshold number of samples.

20. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the logged accelerometer data includes a value along a first axis of motion and a value along a second axis of motion.

21. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the reversal of the change in visibility of the display is turning off the display.

22. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the reversal of the change in visibility of the display is turning off a backlight of the display.

23. A method executing on a wearable electronic device, the method comprises:

determining that sensor data, generated during a first time period by a set of one or more sensors of the wearable electronic device, matches a watch check rule, wherein the watch check rule represents a pattern of motion that is indicative of a user checking a display of the wearable electronic device;

based on the match between the sensor data generated during the first time period and the watch check rule, causing a change in visibility of a display of the wearable electronic device and logging accelerometer data present in the sensor data generated during the first time period;

determining that the sensor data generated during a second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond a threshold; and

based on the determination that the sensor data generated during the second time period includes accelerometer data that deviates from the logged accelerometer data beyond the threshold, reversing the change in visibility of the display.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

detecting, using the sensor data, that the user is performing a particular type of activity; and

enabling the watch check rule based on the detection.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein causing the change in visibility includes turning on the display.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein causing the change in visibility includes turning on a back light of the display.

27. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

obtaining sensor data from the set of sensors generated during a third time period; and

calculating a metric from the sensor data generated during the third time period, wherein the change in visibility of the display includes displaying the metric.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the metric is at least one of:

a time, a pace, a speed, a distance, a mile split, a heart rate, a clock, a step count, a floor count, an estimation of calories burned, and an active minute count.

29. The method of claim 23, wherein the threshold is a threshold amount for a threshold number of samples.

30. The method of claim 23, wherein the accelerometer data includes values along a first axis of motion and values along a second axis of motion.
