Abstract

A Pervasive Intermediate Network Attached Storage Application (PINApp) enables users to digitally assign (pin/tack) a folder or drive to a public cloud storage service for the purpose of sharing their digital content with others. The PINApp enables users to engage the cloud storage services without the need to upload the digital content to the cloud in order for it to be viewed or shared. The PINApp can be used to unify all of the digital content stored on multiple devices and cloud services for a single owner or user.

Claims

1. A data storage access and retrieval method performed by one or more processors comprising:

receiving access information for a remote data storage service from a user;

verifying the access information with the remote data storage service;

receiving a selection of one or more files stored on a local storage device;

determining address information for one or more communication devices connected to the one or more processors, the address information comprising a first address;

transmitting the address information and the selection of one or more files to the remote data storage service;

after the access information is verified, instructing the remote data storage service to display the selection of one or more files when accessed by the user, wherein the remote data storage service is accessed at a second address;

receiving a request for at least one of the selection of one or more files from the user, wherein the request is first directed to the remote data storage service at the second address and subsequently redirected to the one or more processors at the first address; and

upon receipt of the request, transmitting at least one of the one or more files to the user from the local data storage device.

2. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 1 further comprising determining routing information of the one or more communication devices.

3. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 2 further comprising transmitting the routing information to the remote data storage service along with the address information.

4. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 1, wherein the local storage device is a removable storage device.

5. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 1, wherein the user is at a device having a third address distinct from the first address and the second address.

6. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 1, wherein the selection of one or more files is displayed to the user via a web interface generated by the remote data storage service.

7. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 1 further comprising storing a listing of the selection of one or more files in a database on the local storage device.

8. A data storage access and retrieval method performed by one or more processors comprising:

determining address information for a communication device connected to the one or more processors, the address information comprising a first address;

transmitting the address information and a selection of one or more files available on a data storage device to a remote data storage service;

instructing the remote data storage service to display the selection of one or more files when accessed by the user, wherein the remote data storage service is accessed at a second address;

receiving at the communication device a request for at least one of the selection of one or more files from the user, wherein the request is first directed to the remote data storage device at the second address and subsequently redirected to the one or more processors at the first address; and

upon receipt of the request, transmitting at least one of the one or more files to the user from the data storage device.

9. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8, wherein the data storage device is local data storage device connected to the one or more processors via a local bus.

10. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8, wherein the data storage device is a remote data storage device connected to the one or more processors via a network.

11. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8 further comprising receiving access information for a remote data storage service from a user and verifying the access information with the remote data storage service, wherein the access information is verified before instructing the remote data storage service to display the selection of one or more files.

12. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8, wherein the user is at a device having a third address distinct from the first address and the second address.

13. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8 further comprising determining routing information for the communication device and transmitting the routing information to the remote data storage service along with the address information.

14. The data storage access and retrieval method of claim 8, wherein the one or more processors are installed in a computing device selected from the group consisting of laptops, desktops, smartphones, PDAs, media players, game consoles, and servers.

15. A data storage and access system comprising:

a first data storage service storing one or more files;

machine readable code stored on a non-transient storage medium that when executed causes a device to;

determine a first address at which the first data storage service is accessible;

receive a selection of the one or more files;

transmit the first address and the selection of the one or more files to a second data storage service, wherein the second data storage service is at a second address; and

instruct the second data storage device to display the selection of the one or more files when accessed;

wherein a request for at least one of the selection of the one or more files is first directed to the second data storage device at the second address and subsequently redirected to the first data storage device at the first address; and

wherein the first data storage service transmits the at least one of the selection of the one or more files to a user upon receipt of the request.

The data storage and access system of claim 15, wherein the machine readable code causes the device to receive access information from the user and verify the access information with the first data storage service before transmitting the first address and selection of the one or more files to the second data storage service.

17. The data storage and access system of claim 15, wherein the machine readable code causes the device to receive access information from the user and verify the access information with the second data storage service before instructing the second data storage device to display the selection of the one or more files.

18. The data storage and access system of claim 15, wherein the machine readable code causes the device to determine routing information for the device and transmit the routing information along with the address information.

19. The data storage and access system of claim 15, wherein the user is at a device having a third address distinct from the first address and the second address.

20. The data storage and access system of claim 15, wherein the selection of the one or more files is displayed via a web interface generated by the second data storage service.
