Abstract

The invention relates to systems for transferring molten metal from one structure to another. Aspects of the invention include a transfer chamber constructed inside of or next to a vessel used to retain molten metal. The transfer chamber is in fluid communication with the vessel so molten metal from the vessel can enter the transfer chamber. A powered device, which may be inside of the transfer chamber, moves molten metal upward and out of the transfer chamber and preferably into a structure outside of the vessel, such as another vessel or a launder.

Claims

1. A method of forming a transfer well in a vessel for containing molten metal, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) creating a form adjacent a side wall of the vessel, the form defining a transfer well having an outer wall, a top surface, a bottom surface, an opening in the top surface, and an internal cavity, the internal cavity having an uptake section, and a restricted area below or as part of the uptake section, and an outlet above the restricted area and in communication with the uptake section;

(b) placing refractory material in the form to create the transfer well, wherein the vessel side wall adjacent the transfer well forms part of the outer wall of the transfer well; and

(c) forming an opening near a bottom of the transfer wall, the opening in communication with the uptake section.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the opening comprises all or part of the restricted area.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the section at or above the opening is configured to have 1/32″

and ¼

″

of clearance between it and the rotor.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the transfer well has a top surface and that further includes the step of attaching one or more metal brackets to the top surface, the one or more brackets for supporting a pump.

6. The method of claim 1 that further includes the step of placing a pump into the transfer well.

7. The method of claim 6 that further includes the step of placing one or more brackets on the pump, the one or more brackets used to help support the pump in the transfer well.

8. The method of claim 5 that further includes the step of placing a molten metal pump into the transfer well and securing it to the one or more brackets.

9. The method of claim 7 wherein the one or more brackets on the pump are secured to the top surface of the transfer well.

10. The method of claim 7 wherein the one or more brackets on the pump are secured to one or more brackets positioned on a top surface of the transfer well.

11. The method of claim 6 wherein the pump does not have support posts or a pump housing.

12. The method of claim 6 wherein the pump has a rotor that is positioned at least partially in the restricted area.

13. The method of claim 7 wherein the pump has a superstructure and the brackets are placed on the superstructure.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the pump has a superstructure and the one or more brackets are placed on the superstructure.

3. A method of forming a first structure for the transfer of molten metal from the first structure to a second structure, the method comprising the steps of:

forming a transfer chamber in the first structure, the transfer chamber having an opening, an uptake section above the opening, and an outlet in communication with the uptake section and above the opening and leading out of the first structure;

wherein the transfer chamber includes a section at or above the opening, but below the outlet, configured to receive a molten metal pump rotor.
