1. A method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit for transmission via a communication channel, the PHY data unit conforming to a first communication protocol, the method comprising:

  • generating a first plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols for a first field of a preamble to be included in the PHY data unit, wherein each OFDM symbol of the first plurality of OFDM symbols corresponds to a first long training sequence of the first communication protocol that is obtained at least by multiplying a predetermined sequence with a second long training sequence of a second communication protocol;

    encoding a first plurality of information bits for a second field of the preamble to generate a first plurality of encoded bits;

    mapping the first plurality of encoded bits to a first plurality of constellation symbols;

    generating a first plurality of modified constellation symbols, including multiplying the first plurality of constellation symbols by the predetermined sequence;

    generating a second plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols to include the first plurality of modified constellation symbols;

    generating the preamble to include the first plurality of OFDM symbols for the first field and the second plurality of OFDM symbols for the second field; and

    generating the PHY data unit to include at least the preamble.
