A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge, the buttress material comprising a buttress body sized to be operably received on a deck of the surgical staple cartridge, the buttress body including at least four edges and a central portion, wherein at least two of said edges comprise a plurality of edge notches formed therein, and wherein the central portion includes a plurality of cutout openings therein.

20. A surgical staple cartridge for use in a surgical instrument, comprising:

a cartridge body including a cartridge deck; a buttress material sized to be received on the cartridge deck; and means for releasably affixing the buttress material to the cartridge body such that the buttress material is retained in tension prior to actuation of the surgical instrument and is released from the cartridge body upon actuation of the surgical instrument.
