Abstract

A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge. In various forms, the buttress material comprises a buttress body that is sized to be operably received on a deck of the surgical staple cartridge. The buttress body includes at least four edges and a central portion. At least two of the edges have a plurality of edge notches formed therein. The central portion may include a plurality of cutout openings therein.

Claims

1. A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge, the buttress material comprising a buttress body sized to be operably received on a deck of the surgical staple cartridge, the buttress body including at least four edges and a central portion, wherein at least two of said edges comprise a plurality of edge notches formed therein, and wherein the central portion includes a plurality of cutout openings therein.

2. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein each of said edge notches extend inward into the central portion a notch length.

3. The buttress material of claim 2, wherein the notch lengths of some of said edge notches differ from the notch lengths of other of said edge notches.

4. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein each of said edge notches extend inward from a corresponding edge into the central portion at a notch angle.

5. The buttress material of claim 4, wherein the notch angle of some of said edge notches differs from the notch angles of other of said edge notches.

6. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein said edge notches in a first one of said edges comprises:

a first plurality of first edge notches in said first one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a first notch length;

a second plurality of second edge notches in said first one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a second notch length; and

a third plurality of third edge notches in said first one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a third notch length.

The buttress material of claim 6, wherein said first plurality of first edge notches are provided in a first portion of said first edge, wherein said second plurality of second edge notches are provided in a second portion of said first edge, and wherein said third plurality of third edge notches are provided in a third portion of said first edge.

The buttress material of claim 6, wherein said first plurality of first edge notches extend inward from said first edge at a first angle relative to the first edge and wherein said second plurality of said second edge notches extend inward from said first edge at a second angle relative to the first edge and wherein said third plurality of said third notches extend inward from said first edge at a third angle relative to said first edge and wherein said first angle differs from at least one of said second and third angles.

9. The buttress material of claim 6, wherein said edge notches in a second one of said edges comprises:

a primary plurality of primary edge notches in said second one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a primary notch length;

a secondary plurality of secondary edge notches in said second one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a secondary notch length; and

a tertiary plurality of tertiary edge notches in said second one of said edges extending inward into the central portion a tertiary notch length.

The buttress material of claim 9, wherein said primary plurality of primary edge notches are provided in a primary portion of said second edge, wherein said secondary plurality of secondary edge notches are provided in a secondary portion of said second edge, and wherein said tertiary plurality of tertiary edge notches are provided in a tertiary portion of said second edge.

The buttress material of claim 9, wherein said primary plurality of primary edge notches extend inward from said second edge at a primary angle relative to the second edge, wherein said secondary plurality of said secondary edge notches extend inward from said second edge at a secondary angle relative to the second edge, wherein said tertiary plurality of said tertiary notches extend inward from said second edge at a tertiary angle relative to said second edge, and wherein said primary angle differs from at least one of said secondary and tertiary angles.

12. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein said plurality of said edge notches comprise a plurality of undulating wave-like curves.

13. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein said plurality of edge notches are configured to provide said at least two edges with a serpentine shape.

14. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein said plurality of cutout openings are arranged in parallel lines of cutout openings in the central portion.

15. The buttress material of claim 14, wherein said cutout openings in one of said parallel lines of cutout openings are parallel to each other and are arranged at an angle relative to the cutout out openings in at least one adjacent said parallel line of said cutout openings.

16. The buttress material of claim 1, wherein said buttress body has a length and has a plurality of different widths along said length.

17. A buttress material for use with a surgical staple cartridge comprising a deck that defines a plurality of staple zones, the buttress material comprising:

a buttress body comprising a first cross-sectional thickness and compressed areas including a second cross-sectional thickness that is less than the first cross-sectional thickness; and

means for registering the buttress body on the deck such that when the buttress body is received on the deck, the compressed areas are in registration with the staple zones.

18. The buttress material of claim 17, wherein each of the staple zones are defined by individual staple pockets in the surgical staple cartridge and wherein the compressed areas correspond in size and shape to the staple zones.

19. The buttress material of claim 17, wherein the buttress body is fabricated from woven material, and wherein the compressed areas are formed by heat pressing.

20. A surgical staple cartridge for use in a surgical instrument, comprising:

a cartridge body including a cartridge deck;

a buttress material sized to be received on the cartridge deck; and

means for releasably affixing the buttress material to the cartridge body such that the buttress material is retained in tension prior to actuation of the surgical instrument and is released from the cartridge body upon actuation of the surgical instrument.
