Abstract

A fastener cartridge assembly for use with a circular surgical fastening device. The fastener cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body that has a circular deck. A plurality of fastener cavities is provided in the circular deck. Each fastener cavity includes two cavity ends wherein one cavity end of each of the fastener cavities is positioned on a first circular axis having a first radius and wherein the other cavity end of each fastener cavity is positioned on a second circular axis that has a second radius that differs from the first radius.

Claims

1. A fastener cartridge assembly for use with a circular surgical fastening device, wherein the fastener cartridge assembly comprises:

a cartridge body comprising a circular deck; and

a plurality of fastener cavities opening through the circular deck, each said fastener cavity comprising two cavity ends and wherein said one cavity end of each of the fastener cavities is positioned on a first circular axis having a first radius and wherein said other cavity end of each said fastener cavity is positioned on a second circular axis that has a second radius that differs from the first radius.

2. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said fastener cavities are arranged in a circular array, wherein said circular array includes at least one line of said fastener cavities that are arranged in a zigzagged orientation.

The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein each said one cavity end of said fastener cavity and each said other cavity end of said fastener cavity are V-shaped and terminate in a point and wherein the points of the one cavity ends are positioned on the first circular axis and the points of said other cavity ends are positioned on the second circular axis.

The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1, further comprising another plurality of other fastener cavities opening through the circular deck wherein each of the other fastener cavities are aligned on a third circular axis that comprises a third radius that differs from the first and second radiuses.

The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1, further comprising another plurality of other fastener cavities opening through the circular deck wherein each of the other fastener cavities are aligned on a third circular axis that comprises a third radius that differs from the first and second radiuses.

6. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 5, wherein each of the other fastener cavities are aligned on one of the first and second circular axes.

7. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 4, wherein each of the other fastener cavities includes another size that differs from a size of each of the fastener cavities.

8. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein each said fastener cavity supports at least one surgical fastener therein.

9. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 2, wherein each said fastener cavity supports at least one surgical fastener therein.

10. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 4, wherein each said fastener cavity supports at least one surgical fastener therein and wherein each of the other fastener cavity supports at least one other surgical fastener therein.

11. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 10, wherein each said surgical fastener has a fastener size and wherein each said other surgical fastener has another fastener size that differs from the fastener size.

12. A fastener cartridge assembly for use with a circular surgical fastener, wherein the fastener cartridge assembly comprises:

a cartridge body comprising a circular deck; and

a plurality of fastener cavities opening through the circular deck, the plurality of fastener cavities arranged in a circular array, wherein said circular array includes at least one line of the fastener cavities arranged in a zigzagged orientation.

13. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 12, further comprising another plurality of other fastener cavities opening through the circular deck wherein each of the other fastener cavities are aligned on a circular axis.

14. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 12, wherein each said fastener cavity supports at least one surgical fastener therein.

15. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 13, wherein each said fastener cavity supports at least one surgical fastener therein and wherein each of the other fastener cavity supports at least one other surgical fastener therein.

16. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 15, wherein each said surgical fastener has a surgical fastener size and each said other surgical fastener has another surgical fastener size that differs from the surgical fastener size.

17. A fastener cartridge assembly for use with a circular surgical fastener, wherein the fastener cartridge assembly comprises:

a circular cartridge body;

a plurality of surgical fasteners operably supported in the circular cartridge body; and

means for guiding the plurality of surgical fasteners while in the circular cartridge body such that upon application of a firing motion thereto, the plurality of surgical fasteners are driven out of the circular cartridge body in a circular array such that the surgical fasteners are oriented relative to each other in a zigzagged orientation.

18. The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein the plurality of surgical fasteners comprises a first plurality of surgical fasteners and a second plurality of surgical fasteners and wherein said means for guiding is configured to guide the first plurality of surgical fasteners while in the circular cartridge body such that upon application of a firing motion thereto, the first plurality of surgical fasteners are driven out of the circular cartridge body in a circular array such that the first plurality of surgical fasteners are oriented relative to each other in a zigzagged orientation and the second plurality of surgical fasteners are oriented in another circular array.

The fastener cartridge assembly of claim 18, wherein each of the surgical fastener of the first plurality of surgical fasteners has a first fastener size and wherein each of the surgical fastener of the second plurality of surgical fasteners has a second fastener size that differs from the first fastener size.

20. A fastener cartridge assembly for use with a circular surgical fastener, wherein the fastener cartridge assembly comprises:

a circular cartridge body;

a plurality of surgical fasteners operably supported in the circular cartridge body, each said surgical fastener comprising a pair of fastener legs; and

means for guiding the plurality of surgical fasteners while in said circular cartridge body such that upon application of a firing motion thereto, said plurality of surgical fasteners are driven out of the circular cartridge body in a circular array such that one leg of each of the surgical fasteners extends through a first circular axis having a first radius and wherein the other leg of each said surgical fastener extends through a second circular axis that has a second radius that differs from the first radius.
