Abstract

An external data retrieval apparatus includes a transceiver, and a processing system coupled to the transceiver. The processing system obtains a plurality of measures over a period of time. The measures relate to a quality of a communications channel between the data retrieval apparatus and an active implantable medical device. The processing system determines a trend in the plurality of measures over the period of time, and then determines a preferred time during which to retrieve data based on the trend.

Claims

1. A method of data retrieval by an external data retrieval apparatus, the method comprising:

retrieving a plurality of different data types from an active implantable medical device, wherein each of the plurality of different data types has a portion of a memory of the active implantable medical device allocated thereto; and

for each of the plurality of different data types, scheduling a next retrieval of the different data type based on a known period of time or based on time data included in retrieved data.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

a first of the plurality of different data types is a first data type that corresponds to a count of a number of occurrences of at least one type of a physiological event over a period of time, and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the first data type is a percentage of the period of time.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

a second of the plurality of different data types is second data type that corresponds to a time of occurrence of each of a plurality of physiological events, in order of occurrence; and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the second data type is a percentage of elapsed time between an oldest occurrence and a most recent occurrence.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein:

a third of the plurality of different data types is a third data type that corresponds to one or more waveforms of one or more physiological events; and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the third data type is a percentage of the time elapsed since an occurrence of an oldest waveform.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising setting a limit on an amount of data to be retrieved during a period of time, wherein a data retrieval schedule is subordinate to the limit.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein a limit on the amount of data is set for each of a first data type, a second data type, and a third data type.

7. An external data retrieval apparatus, comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processing system coupled to the transceiver and configured to;

retrieve a plurality of different data types from an active implantable medical device, wherein each of the plurality of different data types has a portion of a memory of the active implantable medical device allocated thereto;

for each of the plurality of different data types, schedule a next retrieval of the different data type based on a known period of time or based on time data included in retrieved data.

8. The external data retrieval apparatus of claim 7, wherein:

a first of the plurality of different data types is a first data type that corresponds to a count of a number of occurrences of at least one type of a physiological event over a period of time, and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the first data type is a percentage of the period of time.

9. The external data retrieval apparatus of claim 7, wherein:

a second of the plurality of different data types is a second data type that corresponds to a time of occurrence of each of a plurality of physiological event, in order of occurrence; and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the second data type is a percentage of elapsed time between an oldest occurrence and a most recent occurrence.

10. The external data retrieval apparatus of claim 7, wherein:

a third of the plurality of different data types is a third data type that corresponds to one or more waveforms of one or more physiological events; and

the time until a next scheduled retrieval of the third data type is a percentage of the time elapsed since an occurrence of an oldest waveform.

11. The external data retrieval apparatus of claim 7, wherein the processing system is further configured to set a limit on an amount of data to be retrieved during a period of time, wherein a data retrieval schedule is subordinate to the limit.

12. The external data retrieval apparatus of claim 11, wherein a limit on the amount of data is set for each of a first data type, a second data type, and a third data type.
