Abstract

Disclosed is a method and mechanism to implement a unified infrastructure for handling IoT components and devices. A platform is provided to integrate, access, and control any type of local device, and to use any type of back-end application to processed collected data from the local devices.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a gateway, collected data from a local networked component, the gateway accesses gateway rules to locally analyze collected data from the local networked component;

configuring a server to interface with the gateway to receive the collected data, the server accesses server rules to perform server processing on the collected data; and

evaluating the gateway rules to determine whether to take localized action on the gateway or on the local networked component, where the localized action is taken in response to identification of a gateway rules condition corresponding to the localized action; and

evaluating the server rules to determine whether to initiate downstream processing of the collected data, where the downstream processing of the collected data is taken in response to identification of a server rules condition corresponding to the downstream processing.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the gateway performs filtering or throttling of the collected data prior to transfer of the collected data to the server.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the server implements data storage rules to control location, storage frequency, or data transformation of the collected data when storing the collected data into a datastore.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the gateway selects from among multiple routing choices to send the collected data to the server, wherein a cost analysis is performed to select a routing choice from among the multiple routing choices.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the local networked component comprises an internet of things (IoT) device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising performing adaptor management to manage updates to the gateway rules and adaptor code on the gateway.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein control signals are provided to the gateway to initiate action on the local networked component.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

implementing an adaptor at the gateway to interface with the local networked component, the adaptor having a gateway rules engine and a gateway rule base, where the gateway rules engine accesses the gateway rules from the gateway rule base to locally analyze, filter, or throttle the collected data from the local networked component;

implementing a server rules engine and a server rule base at the server, the server rules engine accessing the server rules from the server rule base to perform server processing on the collected data, where one or more information processing applications perform the downstream processing of the collected data;

processing the gateway rules at the gateway and the server rules at the server to coordinate processing of the collected data from the local networked component at both the gateway and the server.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving, at a gateway, collected data from a local networked component, the gateway accesses gateway rules to locally analyze collected data from the local networked component;

configuring a server to interface with the gateway to receive the collected data, the server accesses server rules to perform server processing on the collected data; and

evaluating the gateway rules to determine whether to take localized action on the gateway or on the local networked component, where the localized action is taken in response to identification of a gateway rules condition corresponding to the localized action; and

evaluating the server rules to determine whether to initiate downstream processing of the collected data, where the downstream processing of the collected data is taken in response to identification of a server rules condition corresponding to the downstream processing.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the gateway performs filtering or throttling of the collected data prior to transfer of the collected data to the server.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the server implements data storage rules to control location, storage frequency, or data transformation of the collected data when storing the collected data into a datastore.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the gateway selects from among multiple routing choices to send the collected data to the server, wherein a cost analysis is performed to select a routing choice from among the multiple routing choices.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein the local networked component comprises an internet of things (IoT) device.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, the operations further comprising performing adaptor management to manage updates to the gateway rules and adaptor code on the gateway.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, wherein control signals are provided to the gateway to initiate action on the local networked component.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9, the operations further comprising:

implementing an adaptor at the gateway to interface with the local networked component, the adaptor having a gateway rules engine and a gateway rule base, where the gateway rules engine accesses the gateway rules from the gateway rule base to locally analyze, filter, or throttle the collected data from the local networked component;

implementing a server rules engine and a server rule base at the server, the server rules engine accessing the server rules from the server rule base to perform server processing on the collected data, where one or more information processing applications perform the downstream processing of the collected data;

processing the gateway rules at the gateway and the server rules at the server to coordinate processing of the collected data from the local networked component at both the gateway and the server.

17. A system, comprising:

a gateway to receive data from and send data to a local networked component, the gateway accessing gateway rules to the locally analyze collected data from the local networked component; and

a server to interface with the gateway to receive the collected data, the server accessing server rules to perform server processing on the collected data.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the gateway comprises a pre-processor having a filter or throttling component.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the server comprises data storage rules to control location, storage frequency, or data transformation of the collected data when storing the collected data into a datastore.

20. The system of claim 17, wherein the gateway comprises a data transfer component that selects from among multiple routing choices to send the collected data to the server, wherein a cost analysis is performed to select a routing choice from among the multiple routing choices.

21. The system of claim 17, wherein the local networked component comprises an internet of things (IoT) device.

22. The system of claim 17, wherein the gateway further comprises an adaptor manager to manage updates to the gateway rules and adaptor code on the gateway.

23. The system of claim 17, wherein the gateway comprises an adaptor to interface with the local networked component, the adaptor having a gateway rules engine and a gateway rule base, and the server comprises a server rules engine and a server rule base, the server rules engine accessing the server rules from the server rule base to perform the server processing on the collected data, where one or more information processing applications are identified for downstream processing of the collected data.
