Abstract

Funnel-trap type delivery and/or retrieval devices for temporary Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters or other medical implants or foreign bodies are described. These may employ a locking sheath or a proximal-aperture capture feature or features for IVC filter (or other device) retrieval.

Claims

1. An apparatus for delivery or retrieval of a vascular medical device, the apparatus comprising:

an elongate shaft having an axis having a flexible distal extension comprising braid,

the distal extension folded-back inwardly at a distal opening and forming a more proximal opening, and

the proximal opening sized to receive a portion of the medical device therethrough for securing the medical device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the distal extension is selectable in angular orientation.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the braid is folded to define the proximal opening.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein two layers of braid are bonded to the shaft.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising the medical device.

6. The apparatus of claim 3, where the medical device is an inferior vena cava filter.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an elongate sleeve receiving the elongate shaft and distal extension, the elongate sleeve sized to secure the portion of the medical device in a pocket within the distal extension.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, further comprising at least one a ring member positioned between two layers of the braid encircling the proximal opening.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the ring member comprises at least one flexible strand of material.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one strand is configured to at least partially close the proximal opening upon actuation.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the at least one strand is a single strand including an eyelet splice at a distal end.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein a tether portion or tether portions of the at least one strand is connected to the apparatus proximal to the proximal opening.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the tether portion or tether portions are connected at a proximal end of the elongate shaft.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the braid of the distal extension is configured so advancement of the elongate member closes the proximal opening by elongation of the extension section relative to the tether or tethers.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising a user interface at a proximal end of the shaft and connected to the tether to actuate the tether for closing the proximal opening or release, the user interface selected from a handle and a plug received by the elongate shaft.

16. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising at least one member positioned to cross the ring member.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein two members cross the ring member in an X pattern.

18. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the at least one flexible strand crosses the proximal opening.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the at least one strand crosses the opening in an X pattern.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein a tether portion or tether portions of the at least one strand is connected to the apparatus proximal to the proximal opening.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the tether portion or tether portions are connected at a proximal end of the elongate shaft.

22. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one flexible strand positioned to cross the proximal opening.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the at least one strand crosses the opening in an X pattern.

24. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein a tether portion or tether portions of the at least one strand is connected to the apparatus proximal to the proximal opening.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the tether portion or tether portions are connected at a proximal end of the elongate shaft.

26. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the flexible member is also positioned between two layers of the braid to encircle the proximal opening.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the at least one strand is a single strand including an eyelet splice at a distal end.
