Abstract

The invention provided herein relates to a wearable medical device and methods of use thereof for monitoring brain signals by electroencephalography technology in critically ill subjects suspected of having abnormal brain wave patterns including but not limited to electrographic seizures, spike and waves, periodic discharges and rhythmic delta activity.

Claims

1. ) A wearable mobile electroencephalography device comprising 1 a sensor element, 2 a fabric element, 3 a signal-processing element, 4 an analysis and display element, and 5 cables and/or 11 wireless transmission elements.

2. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein the sensor element comprises:

i) An electrode component 6;

ii) A preamplifier component 7;

3. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein the signal-processing element comprises:

i) amplifier component 8;

ii) analog-to-digital converter component 9;

4. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein the sensor element senses and transduces brain wave signals.

5. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein said fabric element is mounted on a user'"'"'s 20 hand 15 or finger 10.

6. ) The wearable device of claim 2, wherein said sensor element is attached to an outer surface of said fabric element that is mounted on said hand or finger.

7. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein said signal-processing element accepts a signal produced by said sensor element and amplifies, filters and/or converts the signal to digital format.

8. ) The wearable device of claim 1, wherein said analysis and display element is able to manipulate, transform and/or visually represent the signal data produced by the sensor element and the signal-processing element.

9. ) The wearable electroencephalography device of claim 1, wherein said sensor element, said fabric element, said signal-processing element, and said analysis and display element are operably interconnected.

10. ) The wearable device of claim 9, wherein said operable interconnection comprises the steps of:

i) Attaching said sensor element to the fabric element by mechanical and/or chemical means;

ii) Linking said sensor element to said signal-processing element via a cable and/or wireless connection;

(a) Wherein said signal-processing element accepts the incoming signal from the sensor element, and performs an additional modification of the signal;

(b) Wherein said additional modification of said signal comprises;

amplification, filtering and analog-to-digital conversion.

iii) Transmission of a digital signal generated by said signal-processing element to the analysis and display element;

(a) Wherein said analysis and display element comprises a desktop computer or a mobile device.

(b) Wherein said analysis and display element analyses said digital signal and displays the resulting digital waveform on a screen for digital processing in real-time by an end-user.

11. ) The wearable device of claim 10, wherein said mechanical means comprise sutures or Velcro.

12. ) The wearable device of claim 10, wherein said chemical means comprise adhesive glue.

13. ) The wearable device of claim 10, wherein said mechanical and/or chemical means does not interfere with the transfer of brain biosignals.

15. ) A method of measuring electroencephalographic signals in a subject 21, the method comprising applying the sensor element of the device of claim 1 on a contact surface 13 on said subject and obtaining a reading of the subject'"'"'s brain wave patterns.

16. ) The method of claim 15, wherein said subject is a human or an animal.

17. ) The method of claim 15, said subject is exhibitin symptoms of convulsive seizures.

18. ) The method of claim 15, wherein said measuring permits diagnosing abnormal brain wave patterns in said subject.

19. ) The method of claim 15, wherein said subject is suspected of exhibiting symptoms of non-convulsive seizures.

20. ) The method of claim 15, wherein said brain wave patterns are associated with convulsive seizures or non-convulsive seizures.

14. ) A method of assembling a wearable mobile electroencephalography device, the method comprising the steps of:

a) attaching a sensor element 1 to the fabric element 2, wherein said fabric element is capable of being mounted on a user'"'"'s 20 finger 10 or hand 15 wherein said sensor element, is operably connected or networked via cables 5 or wireless transmission elements 11 to a signal-processing element and wherein said signal-processing element is operably connected or networked via cables or wireless transmission elements to an analysis and display element 4.
