Abstract

The present discussion relates to contextually interacting with applications. One example can include a computer that has a set of applications installed thereon. This example can also include a URI manager configured to receive a context-defining URI, the URI manager can be configured to run a sub-set of the applications specified by the context-defining URI and to set a common context for the sub-set of the applications as specified by the context-defining URI.

Claims

1. At least one computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processing device to perform acts, comprising:

receiving information related to an entity; and

,

generating a link that specifies an application installed on a computer and a context for the application relating to the entity.

2. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the receiving information comprises receiving a triggering event.

3. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1, wherein the generating a link comprises generating a universal resource identifier (URI).

4. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1, further comprising sending the link to the computer.

5. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 1, embodied as a computer-readable storage device that is included on a remote computer that also includes the processor.

21. A computer comprising:

at least one hardware processor; and

at least one computer-readable hardware storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the at least one hardware processor, cause the at least one hardware processor to;

obtain a universal resource identifier (URI), wherein the URI specifies a parameter defining a shared context usable by a first application and a second application;

detect a selection of the URI;

check with the first application to ensure that changing to the shared context will not cause data loss; and

provided that the first application confirms that changing to the shared context will not cause data loss, cause the first application and the second application to execute using the shared context defined by the parameter.

22. The computer of claim 21, wherein the first application and the second application are both local applications that execute on the computer.

23. The computer of claim 21, wherein at least one of the first application or the second application is a remote application that executes on another computer.

24. The computer of claim 21, wherein the selection is received from a user.

25. The computer of claim 24, wherein the selection is received from the user via a displayed interface of the first application.

26. The computer of claim 21, wherein the URI is generated locally on the computer.

27. The computer of claim 21, wherein the URI is received from another computer over a network.

28. A method performed by a computing device, the method comprising:

detecting a triggering event indicating information related to an entity is available to a first application and a second application;

generating a link that identifies the information related to the entity; and

using the link to cause the first application and the second application to execute using the information related to the entity as a shared context.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the using comprises sending the link over a network to another computing device that executes at least one of the first application or the second application.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein at least one of the first application or the second application executes on the computing device.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein the link comprises a universal resource identifier (URI).

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the URI comprises a parameter identifying the shared context.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the URI comprises an identifier of the first application.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the URI comprises an identifier of the second application.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the identifier of the first application appears after a colon symbol in the URI.
