1. A system for providing a video communication with a detention environment, the system comprising:

  • a memory comprising instructions; and

    a processor configured to execute the instructions to;

    receive a request from a first user to initiate a video communication with a second user, the video communication using a shared communications terminal located in a detention environment;

    determine, based on a schedule of the second user, whether the second user is currently available for participating in the video communication;

    when the determination indicates the second user is currently available for participating in the video communication, send a notification to the second user to accept the request to initiate the video communication;

    receive a response to the notification to the second user to accept the request to initiate the video communication; and

    initiate the video communication between the first user and the second user when the response to the notification indicates the second user has accepted the request to initiate the video communication,wherein one of the first user and the second user is detained in the detention environment.
