Abstract

The invention includes a control for adjusting a thermostat comprising a controller including a microprocessor and memory for storing a user interface, a display screen including a touch sensitive screen, the display screen coupled to the microprocessor and memory; the user interface including a main screen having a temperature icon, a time icon, an adjustment icon, and temperature and time set points for at least two days of the week and the microprocessor programmed to highlight one of the time or temperature icons upon selection of said one of the time or temperature icons and thereafter, without navigating away from the main screen, upon selection of the adjustment touch pad icon, the microprocessor programmed to adjust the time or temperature set point.

Claims

1. A control for adjusting a thermostat comprising:

a controller including a microprocessor and memory for storing a user interface;

a display screen including a touch sensitive screen, the display screen coupled to the microprocessor and memory;

the user interface including a main screen having a temperature icon, a time icon, an adjustment icon, and temperature and time set points for at least two days of the week; and

the microprocessor programmed to highlight one of the time or temperature icons upon selection of said one of the time or temperature icons and thereafter, without navigating away from the main screen, upon selection of the adjustment touch pad icon, the microprocessor programmed to adjust the time or temperature set point.

The control of claim 1 wherein the adjustment touch pad icon provides an increment/decrement function in order to a) increase or decrease a temperature set point, respectively, or b) move forward or backward a time set point, respectively and the increase, decrease, forward or backward adjustments provide a quick edit function.

3. The control of claim 2 wherein activation of one of the time or temperature icons occurs by depressing the time or temperature icon for a first preselected duration in order to provide for programming.

4. The control of claim 3 wherein the first preselected duration is between 1-5 seconds and the touch pad icon includes an up arrow and down arrow.

5. The control of claim 3 wherein activation of the adjustment icon occurs by depressing the adjustment icon for a second preselected duration that is shorter that the first preselected duration.

The control of claim 2 wherein the main screen includes a change of mode icon that is not activated when operating the quick edit function that provides for adjustment of a single day or multiple day set points dependent on the display screen condition at the initiation of the quick edit function.

7. The control of claim 6 wherein the change of mode icon includes one of:

ENTER, CANCEL, SAVE, OK, NEXT, CHANGE MODE, M, TU, W, TH, F, SA, SU >

, <

, RETURN GROUP, GROUP, REGROUP and DAYS.

8. The control of claim 7, wherein the main screen is devoid of any message pertaining to adjustment of multiple day set points and a separate help screen provides the sole message pertaining to adjustment of multiple day set points.

9. The control of claim 1 wherein the highlighting of one of the time or temperature icons is accomplished by the suppression of the display of the temperature icon upon activation of the time icon and suppression of the display of the time icon upon activation of the temperature icon.

10. The control of claim 9 wherein the suppression is implemented by the disappearance of the display of the temperature icon upon activation of the time icon and disappearance of the display of the time icon upon activation of the temperature icon.

The control of claim 2 wherein the time or temperature icon includes a predetermined time trigger so that pressing the time or temperature icon for a period of time greater than the predetermined time trigger results in activation of the quick edit mode and pressing the time or temperature icon for a period of time less than the predetermined time trigger results in continuation of a standard programming mode.

12. The control of claim 1 wherein the time or temperature icons comprise alphanumeric symbols located in a table displaying set points arranged in the table, each column or row labeled at least one of:

TIME, HEAT, COOL, M, TU, W, TH, F, SA and SU.

13. The control of claim 12 wherein the table further comprising a column or row labeled at least one of:

MORN, DAY, EVE, NIGHT.

The control of claim 13 wherein the desired set point is adjusted by touching the table in the proper column and row to coincide with the pertinent time or temperature icon corresponding to the desired function to be adjusted by touching the time or temperature icon for the preselected time duration.

15. The control of claim 1 wherein adjustment icons comprise representation of up and down arrows.

16. The control of claim 1 further comprising:

a fan button for selecting a fan mode for the heat and cool modes.

17. The control of claim 1 further comprising a program button for activating a seven day programming mode.

18. The control of claim 1 wherein the controller is provided for one of a thermostat, or a remote device programmed to control a thermostat.

19. The control of claim 1 wherein the main screen is the initial home screen displaying a table having selected time and temperature set points.

20. A control display for operating a thermostat, the display including:

a program button

an adjustment button;

a set time button;

a set temperature button; and

wherein upon touching the set time button, the set temperature button programmed to disappear and upon touching the set temperature button, the set time button programmed to disappear.

The display of claim 20 wherein depressing the set time or set temperature button for a duration greater than a predetermined time trigger provides for activation of the adjustment button for adjusting either the set time or set temperature without navigating to another screen and the adjustment indicated by the displayed set time or set temperature.
