Abstract

An adhesive used in underground applications where vegetation is present wherein the adhesive has been doped with a material or materials that deter the growth properties of adjacent vegetation. The materials can include Zinc, Copper Sulfate, Copper Oxide, as well as sulfates of Zinc, Manganese, and Nickel, in quantities that will repel or deter the advancement of roots and invasive vegetation into fittings and joints in an underground system. The adhesive is used to bond a conduit and a fitting in an air-tight and water tight seal, and the inclusion of the root deterrent material resists invasion of nearby roots into the piping. The root deterring supplements to the adhesive to not degrade the performance of the adhesive and actually repel roots in the vicinity of the materials.

Claims

1. An adhesive compound for use in fluid transport systems where vegetation is present, comprising:

a base adhesive; and

an additive incorporated into the base adhesive to form a compound, the additive selected for its vegetation deterring properties;

wherein the additive resists vegetation from migrating across the adhesive without impairing bonding properties of the base adhesive.

2. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein the base adhesive is a natural adhesive.

3. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein the base adhesive is a synthetic adhesive.

4. The adhesive of claim 2, wherein the additive includes Zinc.

5. The adhesive of claim 2, wherein the additive includes Manganese.

6. The adhesive of claim 2, wherein the additive includes Nickel.

7. The adhesive of claim 2, wherein the additive includes Copper Sulfate.

8. The adhesive of claim 2, wherein the additive includes Copper Oxide.

9. The adhesive of claim 3, wherein the additive includes Zinc.

10. The adhesive of claim 3, wherein the additive includes Manganese.

11. The adhesive of claim 3, wherein the additive includes Nickel.

12. The adhesive of claim 3, wherein the additive includes Copper Sulfate.

13. The adhesive of claim 3, wherein the additive includes Copper Oxide.

14. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein the additive is a combination of Copper Sulfate and a selected one of a group comprising Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, and Nickel Sulfate.

15. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein the additive is a combination of Zinc Sulfate and a selected one of a group comprising Manganese Sulfate, Copper Oxide, and Nickel Sulfate.

16. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein the base adhesive is rubber cement.

17. The adhesive of claim 1, wherein a ratio of base adhesive to additive has a range of 0.0025:

18. A vegetation deterring thermoplastic pipe coupling apparatus comprising:

first and second thermoplastic pipes;

a coupling device for connecting the first and second pipes together;

a vegetation deterring adhesive compound including a base adhesive and an additive having vegetation deterring properties, the compound forming a continuous peripheral barrier adhering the pipes together and deterring penetration of vegetation.

19. The vegetation deterring thermoplastic pipe coupling apparatus of claim 18 wherein the additive is a combination of Zinc Sulfate and a selected one of a group comprising Manganese Sulfate, Copper Oxide, and Nickel Sulfate.

20. A method of making a vegetation deterging coupling apparatus including:

selecting first and second pipes having respective male and female pipe sections;

making a coupling by selecting the male and female pipe sections to interfit one another and selecting a vegetation deterring adhesive compound of a base adhesive and a vegetation deterring additive including Copper Sulfate, and forming a continuous peripheral vegetation deterring barrier of the compound interposed between the male and female pipe sections.
