Abstract

An apparatus includes a first display, an indicium, and a second display. The second display can include a light-generating source deposited on a substrate. The second display illuminates the indicium and the second display has a thickness of less than 0.25 millimeters. The apparatus also includes one or more controllers communicatively coupled to the first display and the second display and configured to control states of the first display and the second display.

Claims

1. An electronic device comprising:

a housing having disposed therein;

a first display having a light diffusion direction; and

an array of light-generating sources (LGSs) deposited on a substrate and having a light emission direction,

the light emission direction being opposite the light diffusion direction, and

the array of LGSs and the substrate having a combined profile height of less than 0.25 millimeters.

2. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein the light-generating sources include unpackaged light-emitting diode dies deposited on the substrate.

3. The electronic device of claim 2, wherein the unpackaged light-emitting diode dies have a maximum length of at most 300 microns and a height between 50 and 80 microns.

4. The electronic device of claim 1, further comprising a controller configured to cause the LGSs to light an indicium.

5. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein the indicium comprises a transparent, semi-transparent, or light-diffusive material.

6. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein the indicium comprises a logo.

7. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein the LGSs are disposed within the housing to illuminate the indicium and are spaced from the indicium such that diffusing offset distance is at most 0.05 millimeters, the diffusing offset distance comprising a distance between an emission surface of the LGSs and a viewing surface of the indicium.

8. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein a backlight for the first display has a thickness of less than 0.25 millimeters.

9. The electronic device of claim 4, the controllers further configured to cause the LGSs to illuminate the indicium while the first display is unlit.

10. An apparatus comprising:

a first display;

an indicium;

a second display comprising a light-generating source deposited on a substrate, the second display illuminating the indicium and the second display having a thickness of less than 0.25 millimeters; and

one or more controllers communicatively coupled to the first display and the second display and configured to control states of the first display and the second display.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the light-generating source is disposed to emit light in a direction transverse to a surface of the first display.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the light-generating source comprises light-emitting diode dies.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the light-emitting diodes of the second display are disposed around a circumference of the indicium and illuminate towards an interior portion of the indicium.

14. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the light-emitting diodes of the second display are disposed along a continuous portion less than an entirety of the indicium and illuminate towards an interior portion of the indicium.

15. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the one or more controllers cause the second display to illuminate the indicium independently of a power state of the first display.

16. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the one or more controllers cause the second display to display images on the indicium.

17. A device comprising:

an indicium;

a backlight comprising deposited light-emitting diodes (dLEDs) affixed to a substrate, the backlight having a thickness of less than 0.25 millimeters, and the backlight having a first diffusive side and a second diffusive side, the second diffusive side opposing the first diffusive side and directed towards the indicium.

18. The device of claim 17 further comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more controllers communicatively coupled to respective ones of the dLEDs; and

computer-readable media with modules stored thereon and executable by the one or more processors, the modules comprising;

a backlight control module that configures the one or more controllers by the one or more processors to control states of respective ones of the dLEDs.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the backlight control module further configures the one or more controllers by the one or more processors to:

cause the state of a first subset of the dLEDs illuminating the second diffusive side to be in an active state while light-emitting diodes not included in the first subset of the dLEDs are in an inactive state and comprise a second subset of the dLEDs, the first subset of the dLEDs and the second subset of the dLEDs illuminating the first diffusive side.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the backlight control module further configures the one or more controllers by the one or more processors to:

cause the first subset of the dLEDs to display a notification while the second subset of the light-emitting diodes are in the inactive state.
