Abstract

A method and system are described for enhancing ground situational awareness to an aircrew via an alphanumeric display of an air traffic control ground clearance, including displaying a symbol for each stage of the clearance. A crewmember may accept or change each stage via a graphical user interface within the alphanumeric display.

Claims

1. A system for modifying autogenerated displayed taxi instructions to a crewmember of a vehicle, the taxi instructions defining a plurality of pathways, the system comprising:

a display configured to display;

a plurality of alphanumeric symbols, each symbol representing one of the pathways;

a graphical user interface including at least one check box associated with each alphanumeric symbol; and

a processor configured to;

accept via the graphical user interface a specific pathway when the at least one check box associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway has been selected in a first manner;

delete via the graphical user interface a specific pathway when the at least one check box associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway has been selected in a second manner; and

modify the format of the alphanumeric symbol representing the first specific pathway when accepted.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the graphical user interface comprises a first check box and a second check box, and the processor is further configured to:

accept the specific pathway when the first check box is selected; and

delete the specific pathway when the second check box is selected.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein graphical user interface comprises a single check box, and the processor is further configured to:

accept the specific pathway when the single check box is selected; and

delete the specific pathway when the single check box is selected twice.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to:

autogenerate a revised plurality of pathways when the specific pathway has been deleted.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to:

display a text box for the entry of a desired pathway.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine the plurality of pathways between a provided initial location and a provided destination location; and

display the plurality of pathways on the display device prior to receiving the user input indicative of a constraining taxi path, wherein displaying the taxi route comprises updating the display device to display the taxi route in lieu of the initial optimal taxi route.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising receiving an initial user input indicative of the destination location prior to receiving the user input indicative of the constraining taxi path, wherein:

determining the plurality of pathways comprises automatically determining the plurality of pathways in response to the initial user input; and

displaying the plurality of pathways comprises automatically displaying the plurality of pathways on the display device in response to determining the plurality of pathways.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the display is further configured to:

display a moving map including the plurality of pathways and the vehicle.

9. A system for modifying autogenerated displayed taxi instructions to a crewmember of a vehicle, the taxi instructions defining a plurality of pathways, the system comprising:

a display configured to display;

a plurality of alphanumeric symbols, each symbol representing one of the pathways;

a graphical user interface including a check box associated with each alphanumeric symbol; and

a processor configured to;

accept via the graphical user interface a first specific pathway when the check box associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway has been selected;

deleting via the graphical user interface a second specific pathway when the check box associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway has been selected twice; and

modifying via a processor the format of the alphanumeric symbol representing the first specific pathway when accepted.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the processor is further configured to:

autogenerate a revised plurality of pathways when the specific pathway has been deleted.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein the processor is further configured to:

display a text box for the entry of a desired pathway.

12. A method for modifying autogenerated taxi instructions displayed on a display, the taxi instructions defining a plurality of pathways, comprising:

serially displaying via the display a plurality of alphanumeric symbols each symbol representing one of the pathways;

displaying via the display a graphical user interface including at least one graphical user interface symbol associated with each alphanumeric symbol;

accepting via the graphical user interface a first specific pathway by selecting in a first manner the at least one graphical user interface symbol associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway;

deleting via the graphical user interface a second specific pathway by selecting in a second manner the at least one graphical user interface symbol associated with the alphanumeric symbol representing the specific pathway; and

modifying via a processor the format of the alphanumeric symbol representing the first specific pathway when accepted.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the graphical user interface comprises a first graphical user interface symbol and a second graphical user interface symbol, the method further comprising:

accepting via the processor the specific pathway when the first graphical user interface symbol is selected; and

deleting via the processor the specific pathway when the second graphical user interface symbol is selected.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein graphical user interface comprises a single graphical user interface symbol, the method further comprising:

accepting via the graphical user interface the specific pathway when the single graphical user interface symbol is selected; and

deleting via the processor the specific pathway when the single graphical user interface symbol is selected twice.

15. The method of claim 12 the method further comprising:

autogenerate via the processor a revised plurality of pathways when the specific pathway has been deleted.

16. The method of claim 12 the method further comprising:

displaying via the display a text box for the entry of a desired pathway. graphic display

17. The method of claim 12, further comprising receiving an initial user input indicative of the destination location prior to receiving the user input indicative of a current location and a destination, wherein:

determining via the processor the plurality of alphanumeric symbols comprises automatically determining the plurality of pathways in response to the initial user input; and

displaying via the display the plurality of pathways comprises automatically displaying the plurality of pathways on the display device in response to determining the plurality of pathways.

18. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

displaying via the display a moving map including the plurality of pathways and the vehicle.
