Abstract

A ball striking device, such as a golf club head, includes a face having a ball striking surface configured for striking a ball and a body connected to the face and extending rearwardly from the face. The body has an impact-influencing structure in the form of a channel positioned on at least one surface of the body. A majority of a force generated by impact with a ball is absorbed by the impact-influencing structure, and a majority of a response force generated by the head upon impact with the ball is generated by the impact-influencing structure. The face may have increased stiffness as compared to existing faces, and may include a stiffening structure to create the increased stiffness, such as a porous or cellular stiffening structure.

2. A golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball striking surface;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face to define an enclosed volume, the body having a front side, a rear side, a heel side, a toe side, a crown, and a sole;

a plurality of channels on a surface of the body, the plurality of channels including a center channel located approximately centered on a geometric centerline of the body, a heel channel located proximate the heel side of the body, and a toe channel located proximate the toe side of the body,

wherein each channel has a periphery defined by boundary edges and each channel is recessed from the surface of the body between the boundary edges, and wherein the boundary edges of the plurality of channels are disconnected and separated from each other by spacing portions including a heel spacing portion separating the center channel from the heel channel and a toe spacing portion separating the center channel from the toe channel.

The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the heel spacing portion extends in a first direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-toe to the front-heel of the body, and the toe spacing portion extends in a second direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-heel to the front-toe of the body.

4. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the heel spacing portion further spaces the heel channel rearwardly from the face and the toe spacing portion further spaces the toe channel rearwardly from the face.

5. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the heel spacing portion and the toe spacing portion are continuous with adjacent portions of the surface of the body.

The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the center channel has a first end on the heel side, a second end on the toe side, a center portion positioned between the first end the second end, and a width defined as the distance between a forward boundary edge to a rearward boundary edge, wherein the width is greater at the center portion than the first end and the second end.

7. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the plurality of channels each have a wall thickness that is smaller than a wall thickness of the body adjacent each of the plurality of channels.

The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the heel channel and the toe channel each have widths measured between a forward boundary edge and a rearward boundary edge thereof, and wherein the width of the heel channel is smaller toward the geometric centerline of the body and larger toward the heel side, the width of the toe channel is smaller toward the geometric centerline of the body and larger toward the toe side.

The golf club head of claim 8, wherein the heel spacing portion extends in a first direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-toe to the front-heel of the body, and the toe spacing portion extends in a second direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-heel to the front-toe of the body.

10. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein the surface of the body is the crown, and wherein the center channel, the heel channel, and the toe channel are located on the crown.

11. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein each of the plurality of channels being recessed from the surface of the body creates a raised portion on an interior surface of the body projecting into the enclosed volume.

12. The golf club head of claim 2, wherein a total weight of the golf club head located behind the plurality of channels is within a range of 135 grams-160 grams.

13. A golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball striking surface;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face to define an enclosed volume, the body having a front side, a rear side, a heel side, a toe side, a crown, and a sole;

a plurality of channels on a surface of the body,

wherein the plurality of channels includes a first channel located proximate the heel side, a second channel located proximate the toe side, and a third channel located near a geometric centerline of the golf club head, and

wherein each channel has a periphery defined on the surface of the body by boundary edges that are disconnected and separate from each other, and each channel is recessed from the surface of the body between the boundary edges,

wherein a plurality of spacing portions are positioned between the face and the plurality of channels to space the channels from the face and from each other.

14. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the third channel has a first end on the heel side, a second end on the toe side, a center portion positioned between the first end and the second end, and a width defined as the distance between a forward boundary edge to a rearward boundary edge, wherein the width is greater at the center portion than the first end and the second end.

15. The golf club head of claim 14, wherein a portion of the rearward boundary edge of the third channel from the first end to the center portion of the third channel and the forward boundary edge of the third channel form an acute angle.

16. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the first channel has a forward boundary edge that forms an acute angle with a rearward boundary edge and the second channel has a forward boundary edge that forms an acute angle with a rearward boundary edge.

17. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the plurality of spacing portions form a continuous surface with a portion of the body adjacent the first, second, and third channels.

The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the spacing portions include a first spacing portion located between the first channel and the third channel and extending in a first direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the golf club head and extends in a direction from the rear-toe to the front-heel of the body, and a second spacing portion located between the second channel and the third channel and extending in a second direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the golf club head and extends in a direction from the rear-heel to the front-toe of the body.

19. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the first channel has a rearward boundary edge and the second channel has a rearward boundary edge, wherein each rearward boundary edge diverges away from each other as the rearward boundary edges extend toward the rear of the golf club head.

20. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein each of the plurality of channels being recessed from the surface of the body creates a raised portion on an interior surface of the body projecting into the enclosed volume.

21. A golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball striking surface;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face to define an enclosed volume, the body having a front side, a rear side, a heel side, a toe side, a crown, and a sole;

a first channel located on the crown proximate the heel side, a second channel located on the crown proximate the toe side, and a third channel located on the crown near a geometric centerline of the golf club head, and

wherein each channel has a periphery defined by boundary edges that are disconnected and separate from each other, and each channel is recessed from the crown between the boundary edges,

wherein the third channel has a first end on the heel side, a second end on the toe side, a center portion positioned between the first end and the second end, and a width defined as the distance between a forward boundary edge to a rearward boundary edge, wherein the width is greater at the center portion than the first end and the second end.

22. The golf club head of claim 21, wherein a portion of the rearward boundary edge of the third channel from the first end to the center portion of the third channel and the forward boundary edge of the third channel form an acute angle.

23. The golf club head of claim 21, wherein the first channel has a forward boundary edge that forms an acute angle with a rearward boundary edge and the second channel has a forward boundary edge that forms an acute angle with a rearward boundary edge.

24. The golf club head of claim 21, wherein a plurality of spacing portions are positioned between the face and each channel and wherein the plurality of spacing portions form a continuous surface with a portion of the crown.

25. The golf club head of claim 21, further comprising a sole channel positioned on the sole of the golf club head, the sole channel being defined by boundary edges such that the sole channel is recessed from the sole between the boundary edges.

26. A golf club head comprising:

a face having a ball striking surface;

a body connected to the face and extending rearward from the face to define an enclosed volume, the body having a front side, a rear side, a heel side, a toe side, a crown, and a sole; and

a plurality of channels on a surface of the body, wherein each channel has a periphery defined by boundary edges and each channel is recessed from the surface of the body between the boundary edges,

wherein the plurality of channels include a center channel located approximately centered on a geometric centerline of the body, a heel channel located proximate the heel side of the body, and a toe channel located proximate the toe side of the body,

the heel channel and the toe channel each have widths measured between a forward boundary edge and a rearward boundary edge thereof, and wherein the width of the heel channel is smaller toward the geometric centerline of the body and larger toward the heel side, the width of the toe channel is smaller toward the geometric centerline of the body and larger toward the toe side.

27. The golf club head of claim 26, wherein each channel has a periphery defined on the surface of the body by boundary edges that are disconnected and separate from each other.

28. The golf club head of claim 26, wherein a heel spacing portion between the center channel and the heel channel, and a toe spacing portion extends between the center channel and the toe channel.

29. The golf club head of claim 28, wherein the heel spacing portion extends in a first direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-toe to the front-heel of the body, and the toe spacing portion extends in a second direction that is angled with respect to the geometric centerline of the body and extends in a direction from the rear-heel to the front-toe of the body.
