1. A system for collecting a biological sample comprising at least one nucleic acid and at least one ridge and valley signature of an individual, the system comprising:
- a biological collection component comprising an epidermal puncturing device operationally connected to a presence sensor, wherein the epidermal puncturing device is configured to be activated to penetrate the epidermis of the individual and to retract, thereby extracting the biological sample; and
at least a first imaging component configured to collect the at least one ridge and valley signature, wherein the at least first imaging component comprises i) a platen configured to receive an appendage of the individual, and ii) a presence sensor configured to a) detect when the appendage is placed in proximity to the platen, and b) activate the epidermal puncturing device to extract the biological sample.

Abstract
Disclosed are devices and methods for collection and analyzing biological samples containing nucleic acid in conjunction with collecting at least one ridge and valley signature of a test subject, while keeping the sample and signature associated with each other. Such devices and methods are used in forensic, human identification, screening, and access control technologies to rapidly process an individual'"'"'s identity or determine the identity of an individual.

17. A method of identifying an individual by collecting a biological sample comprising at least one nucleic acid sample and at least one ridge and valley signature of a individual, comprising the steps of:
-
providing an imaging component having a platen surface and a presence sensor wherein the platen surface is configured to permit an energy wave to penetrate the platen; positioning an appendage of an individual in proximity to the platen and the presence sensor, wherein when the presence sensor detects the proximity of the appendage then the presence sensor activates an epidermal puncturing device to contact the appendage and to penetrate the epidermis of the appendage; collecting the biological sample to the epidermal puncturing device; and collecting the at least one ridge and valley signature imaged by the energy wave, wherein the signature is collected electronically. - View Dependent Claims (18)
