Abstract

A peristaltic pump disclosed herein includes a raceway, a plunger, a motor, and a heater. The raceway is configured to retain a tube (e.g., an IV tube). The plunger acts on the tube disposed within the raceway. The motor engages the plunger to actuate the plunger. The heater is disposed in thermal-conductive contact with the tube. That is, the heater, either through direct or indirect application, heats the tube.

Claims

1. A peristaltic pump, comprising:

a raceway configured to retain a tube;

a plunger configured to act on the tube disposed within the raceway;

a motor configured to engage the plunger to actuate the plunger; and

a heater disposed in thermal-conductive contact with the tube.

2. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, wherein the heater is disposed on the plunger.

3. The peristaltic pump according to claim 2, wherein the heater is disposed on a back of the plunger, the back of the plunger being at an opposite side of the plunger away from the raceway.

4. The peristaltic pump according to claim 3, further comprising a rocker arm coupled to the plunger, wherein the heater is disposed between the rocker arm and the plunger on the back of the plunger.

5. The peristaltic pump according to claim 2, further comprising a temperature sensor disposed on the plunger.

6. The peristaltic pump according to claim 5, wherein the temperature sensor is a thermister.

7. The peristaltic pump of according to claim 5, wherein the temperature sensor is configured to measure a temperature of the tube disposed within the raceway.

8. The peristaltic pump according to claim 5, wherein the temperature sensor is configured to measure a temperature of the heater.

9. The peristaltic pump according to claim 5, wherein the temperature sensor is configured to measure a temperature of the plunger.

10. The peristaltic pump of according to claim 1, wherein the heater is disposed within the raceway and is configured to heat the tube retained within the raceway.

11. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, wherein the raceway is disposed on a door.

12. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further comprising:

a heater controller configured to control heating of the heater; and

a temperature sensor configured to sense heat generated by the heater.

13. The peristaltic pump according to claim 12, wherein the heater controller is configured to control the heater to achieve a target temperature when the peristaltic pump is programmed to operate beyond a threshold flow rate.

14. The peristaltic pump according to claim 12, wherein the heater controller is configured to control the heater to achieve a target temperature when the peristaltic pump cannot achieve a target flow rate without activating the heater.

15. The peristaltic pump according to claim 12, wherein the heater controller is configured to activate the heater when a predetermined type of tube is loaded within the raceway.

16. The peristaltic pump according to claim 12, wherein the heater controller is configured to set a target temperature based upon a set loaded into the raceway.

17. The peristaltic pump according to claim 12, wherein the heater controller is configured to set a target temperature based upon a set loaded.

18. The peristaltic pump according to claim 17, further comprising a user interface, wherein the set loaded is determined based upon user input into the user interface.

19. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further including a display configured to display a message to plug a power cord coupled to the peristaltic pump into a power source when the heater is activated.

20. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, wherein a controller is coupled to the heater to control operation of the peristaltic pump.

21. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of heaters including the heater, wherein each of the plurality of heaters is in thermal-conductive contact with the tube.

22. The peristaltic pump according to claim 21, wherein the heater of the plurality of heaters is disposed on the plunger of the peristaltic pump.

23. The peristaltic pump according to claim 22, wherein:

another heater of the plurality of heaters is disposed on the plunger, and

the another heater is not disposed on the plunger.

24. The peristaltic pump according to claim 23, wherein the another heater is disposed on the raceway.

25. The peristaltic pump according to claim 23, wherein the another heater is disposed adjacent to the tube on a pump body of the peristaltic pump.

26. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further comprising an insulator disposed adjacent to the heater, the insulator being configured to direct thermal flow from the heater toward the tube.

27. The peristaltic pump according to claim 26, wherein the heater is disposed on the plunger and the insulator is disposed on at least a side of the heater opposite to a side facing the tube.

28. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further comprising a controller operatively coupled to the heater, wherein the controller operatively sends a plurality of current pulses to the heater to heat the heater.

29. The peristaltic pump according to claim 28, further comprising an amplifier to amplify the plurality of current pulses prior to being sent to the heater.

30. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, further comprising a controller configured to heat the heater to a predetermined temperature.

31. The peristaltic pump according to claim 30, wherein the predetermined temperature is selected to achieve a predetermined maximum flow error rate of the controller when controlling actuation of the plunger to move fluid through the tube.

32. The peristaltic pump according to claim 31, wherein the predetermined temperature is selected based upon a material of the tube.

33. The peristaltic pump according to claim 30, wherein the predetermined temperature is selected in accordance with a plurality of tube types.

34. The peristaltic pump according to claim 33, wherein each tube type of the plurality of tube types affects an error flow rate depending upon the predetermined temperature.

35. The peristaltic pump according to claim 34, wherein the predetermined temperature is selected to minimize a maximum error flow rate of all of the plurality of tube types.

36. The peristaltic pump according to claim 35, wherein the plunger is a spring-biased plunger configured to use a spring to urge a volume of fluid to be discharged by the plunger, wherein a delta movement of the plunger from a full fill volume to a full discharge volume is correlated to a fluid discharge volume.

37. The peristaltic pump according to claim 36, wherein the correlation between the delta movement of the plunger to the fluid discharge volume corresponds to a predetermined temperature selected to minimize the maximum error flow rate of all of the plurality of tube types.

38. The peristaltic pump according to claim 33, wherein a tube type of the plurality of tube types is defined as a function of a material of a wall of a respective tube of the plurality of tube types.

39. The peristaltic pump according to claim 1, wherein the plunger is a spring-biased plunger configured to use a spring to urge a volume of fluid to be discharged by the plunger, wherein a delta movement of the plunger from a full fill volume to a full discharge volume is correlated to an estimated fluid discharge volume.

40. The peristaltic pump according to claim 39, wherein the correlation is determined using a linear equation having at least one parameter.

41. The peristaltic pump according to claim 40, wherein a parameter of the at least one parameter is increased or decreased in accordance with an increase or decrease of a target temperature.

42. The peristaltic pump according to claim 40, wherein a target temperature is configured to minimize a maximum error flow rate for a plurality of tube types, the tube being a tube type of the plurality of tubes.

43. The peristaltic pump according to claim 42, wherein the target temperature is selected to minimize the maximum error flow rate for a plurality of tube types when using fixed parameters of the at least one parameter of the linear equation.

44. The peristaltic pump according to claim 40, wherein the linear equation is ax+b=y, where x is the delta movement of the plunger and y is the estimated fluid discharge volume, wherein the at least one parameter include the a and b of the linear equation.

45. A method of infusing fluid into a patient, the method comprising:

peristalticly actuating a tube using a peristaltic pump to pump fluid;

periodically pressing a plunger, of the peristaltic pump, against the tube; and

heating a portion of the tube being acted upon by the plunger.
