Abstract

An aspect of the present disclosure provides run-time adaption of external properties controlling operation of applications. In one embodiment, a setup data is maintained indicating conditions and properties that control the operation of applications. Each property is associated with a corresponding condition in the setup data to indicate that the property is to be configured upon satisfaction of the corresponding condition. In response to determining that a specific condition indicated in the setup data has been satisfied, a set of properties that is associated with the determined condition is identified. The applications are then automatically configured to thereafter operate with the identified set of properties.

Claims

1. A method of controlling operation of applications, said method comprising:

maintaining a setup data indicating a plurality of conditions and a plurality of properties, wherein said plurality of properties control the operation of a set of applications, wherein each property is associated with a corresponding condition in said setup data to indicate that the property is to be configured upon satisfaction of the corresponding condition;

determining that a first condition of said plurality of conditions has been satisfied;

identifying, based on said setup data, a first set of properties that is associated with said first condition, said first set of properties being contained in said plurality of properties; and

configuring automatically said set of applications to thereafter operate with said first set of properties.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a first property of said first set of properties controls the operation of a first application of said set of applications,

wherein said setup data contains a first rule specifying said first condition and a first value for said first property,

wherein in response to said determining that said first condition is satisfied, said configuring sets said first property to said first value to cause said first application to thereafter be operative with said first property set to said first value.

The method of claim 2, wherein said first condition specifies a first time instance, wherein said determining comprises comparing a current time with said first time instance to obtain a logical result, wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said first condition specifies a first event, wherein said determining determines that said first condition is satisfied upon occurrence of said first event.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein said first condition specifies a first message and a number of occurrences, wherein said determining comprises:

maintaining a count of the number of times said first message is received from said first application; and

comparing said count with said number of occurrences to obtain a logical result,

wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said first condition further specifies a first time instance, wherein said maintaining and said comparing are performed only after said first time instance.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said first condition further specifies a first event, wherein said maintaining and said comparing are performed only upon the occurrence of said first event.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said first set of properties comprises properties that controls the operation of an enterprise application and also an application server in whose context said enterprise application is executed, said enterprise application and said application server being contained in said set of applications.

9. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing one or more sequences of instructions for enabling a system to control operation of applications, wherein execution of said one or more instructions by one or more processors contained in said system enables said system to perform the actions of:

maintaining a setup data indicating a plurality of conditions and a plurality of properties, wherein said plurality of properties control the operation of a set of applications, wherein each property is associated with a corresponding condition in said setup data to indicate that the property is to be configured upon satisfaction of the corresponding condition;

determining that a first condition of said plurality of conditions has been satisfied;

identifying, based on said setup data, a first set of properties that is associated with said first condition, said first set of properties being contained in said plurality of properties; and

configuring automatically said set of applications to thereafter operate with said first set of properties.

10. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 9, wherein a first property of said first set of properties controls the operation of a first application of said set of applications,

wherein said setup data contains a first rule specifying said first condition and a first value for said first property,

wherein in response to said determining that said first condition is satisfied, said configuring sets said first property to said first value to cause said first application to thereafter be operative with said first property set to said first value.

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 10, wherein said first condition specifies a first time instance, wherein said determining comprises comparing a current time with said first time instance to obtain a logical result, wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

12. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 10, wherein said first condition specifies a first event, wherein said determining determines that said first condition is satisfied upon occurrence of said first event.

13. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 10, wherein said first condition specifies a first message and a number of occurrences, wherein said determining comprises one or more instructions for:

maintaining a count of the number of times said first message is received from said first application;

comparing said count with said number of occurrences to obtain a logical result,

wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

14. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 13, wherein said first condition further specifies a first time instance and a first event, wherein said maintaining and said comparing are performed only after said first time instance and upon the occurrence of said first event.

15. A digital processing system comprising:

a processor;

a random access memory (RAM);

a non-transitory machine readable medium to store one or more instructions, which when retrieved into said RAM and executed by said processor causes said digital processing system perform the actions of;

maintaining a setup data indicating a plurality of conditions and a plurality of properties, wherein said plurality of properties control the operation of a set of applications, wherein each property is associated with a corresponding condition in said setup data to indicate that the property is to be configured upon satisfaction of the corresponding condition;

determining that a first condition of said plurality of conditions has been satisfied;

identifying, based on said setup data, a first set of properties that is associated with said first condition, said first set of properties being contained in said plurality of properties; and

configuring automatically said set of applications to thereafter operate with said first set of properties.

16. The digital processing system of claim 15, wherein a first property of said first set of properties controls the operation of a first application of said set of applications,

wherein said setup data contains a first rule specifying said first condition and a first value for said first property,

wherein in response to said determining that said first condition is satisfied, said digital processing system sets said first property to said first value to cause said first application to thereafter be operative with said first property set to said first value.

The digital processing system of claim 16, wherein said first condition specifies a first time instance, wherein said digital processing system compares a current time with said first time instance to obtain a logical result, wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

18. The digital processing system of claim 16, wherein said first condition specifies a first event, wherein said digital processing system determines that said first condition is satisfied upon occurrence of said first event.

19. The digital processing system of claim 16, wherein said first condition specifies a first message and a number of occurrences, wherein for said determining, said digital processing system performs the actions of:

maintaining a count of the number of times said first message is received from said first application; and

comparing said count with said number of occurrences to obtain a logical result,

wherein said identifying and said configuring are performed on one value of said logical result and not performed upon another value of said logical result.

20. The digital processing system of claim 19, wherein said first condition further specifies a first time instance and a first event, wherein said digital processing system performs said maintaining and said comparing only after said first time instance and the occurrence of said first event.
