Abstract

A medical device configured for placement in a blood vessel, in which an elastic tube extends between first and second expandable anchoring stents. The elastic tube is constructed of a resilient material that deflects outward in response to increased blood pressure of a heart beat and that moves back inward as the blood pressure drops, thereby aiding the heart'"'"'s pumping action.

Claims

1. A medical device configured for placement in a blood vessel in which blood pressure increases and decreases with the beating of a heart of a medical patient, the medical device comprising:

a first expandable anchoring stent configured to engage when expanded with an interior wall of the blood vessel;

a second expandable anchoring stent configured to engage when expanded with the interior wall of the blood vessel; and

an elastic tube extending between the first and second anchoring stents and configured to conduct blood flowing through the blood vessel between the first and second anchoring stents;

wherein the elastic tube is constructed of a resilient material that deflects outward in response to increased blood pressure of a heart beat and that moves back inward as the blood pressure drops, thereby aiding the heart'"'"'s pumping action.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the elastic tube has an hourglass shape including a narrow portion between the first and second anchoring stents when blood pressure inside the vessel is low between heart beats.

3. A medical device for implantation in a heart having a native heart valve and a vessel extending from the native heart valve, the medical device comprising:

a support structure configured to engage at least a portion of the native heart valve;

a first stent configured to couple to the support structure and extend from the support structure into the vessel;

a prosthetic heart valve configured to couple to at least one of the first stent or the support structure; and

a deflector configured to be supported by the first stent and abate blood flow against the vessel;

wherein the deflector is constructed of a resilient material that deflects away from a first, un-deflected position in response to increased blood pressure of a heart beat and that moves back toward the un-deflected position as the blood pressure drops, thereby aiding the heart'"'"'s pumping action.

4. The medical device of claim 3, wherein the deflector is an elastic tube that has an hourglass shape including a narrow portion when blood pressure inside the vessel is low between heart beats.

5. The medical device of claim 3, wherein the support structure is configured to receive and support therein the prosthetic heart valve.

6. The medical device of claim 5, wherein the prosthetic heart valve is expandable within an interior of the support structure, thereby causing one or more native leaflets of the native heart valve to be frictionally secured between the support structure and the expanded prosthetic heart valve.

7. The medical device of claim 3, and further comprising a second stent spaced away from the first stent when the device is implanted, wherein the deflector extends between the first and second stents.

8. A medical device for implantation in a heart having a native heart valve and a vessel extending from the native heart valve, the medical device comprising:

a support structure;

a first stent, separate from the support structure, configured to couple to the support structure using a plurality of retaining arms and extend from the support structure into the vessel;

a prosthetic heart valve configured for implantation in the native heart valve without a direct coupling to the support structure or the first stent; and

a deflector configured to be supported by the first stent and abate blood flow against the vessel;

wherein the support structure is configured to extend around the leaflets of the native heart valve;

wherein the leaflets of the native heart valve are pinched between the prosthetic heart valve and the support structure after implantation; and

wherein the deflector is configured to resiliently respond to blood flow.

9. The medical device of claim 8, wherein the deflector defines a lumen and includes a resilient wall structure.

12. The medical device of claim 8, and further comprising a second stent spaced away from the first stent when the device is implanted, wherein the deflector extends between the first and second stents.

10. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the support structure is configured to receive and support therein the prosthetic heart valve.

11. The medical device of claim 10, wherein the prosthetic heart valve is expandable within an interior of the support structure, thereby causing one or more native leaflets of the native heart valve to be frictionally secured between the support structure and the expanded prosthetic heart valve.
