Abstract

The invention describes a sinus balloon catheter and methods of use. Specifically a sinus balloon catheter for dilating a sinus cavity lumen is provided with a tip that can be extended. The catheter comprises a guide tube with a proximal and distal end, a sleeve member, a balloon disposed upon the sleeve member and a rounded tip arranged at the distal end and extendable along with the extension of the sleeve member.

Claims

1. A device for dilating a drainage pathway of a sinus cavity, comprising

an inner guide member defining a first lumen;

a sleeve member defining a second lumen, wherein the inner guide member is at least partially disposed within the second lumen;

a balloon disposed on the sleeve member;

a rounded tip member disposed at a position that is distal to a distal tip of both the sleeve member and the inner guide member;

a balloon advancement member configured to advance the sleeve member along the inner guide member; and

a means for moving the rounded tip member.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member includes a wire, wherein the rounded tip member is secured to a distal end of the wire.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member include a spring that is secured to a proximal end of the wire and provides a force urging the rounded tip member against the inner guide member.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member includes a chamber, wherein a proximal end of the wire is secured within the chamber.

5. The device of claim 4, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member includes a ball contained within the chamber and the ball is secured to a proximal end of the wire.

6. The device of claim 2, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member includes at least one detent that provide resistance against distal advancement of the wire relative to the distal tip of the sleeve member.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the balloon member is configured to advance off the distal tip of the inner guide member.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the rounded tip member is configured to move relative to only one of the tip of the sleeve member or the tip of the inner guide member at any one time.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member is configured to move with the sleeve member.

10. The device of claim 9, further including a handle secured to the inner guide member.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the means for moving the rounded tip member is not secured to the handle.

12. The device of claim 10, wherein all portions of the means for moving the rounded tip member are configured to advance or retract relative to the inner guide member.

13. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a patient, comprising:

providing the balloon dilation catheter of claim 1;

directing a distal end of the inner guide member into the head of a patient through a nostril;

directing the distal end of the inner guide member to a position near a sinus drainage pathway;

advancing the sleeve member off the distal tip of the inner guide member and to a desired position within the sinus drainage pathway, wherein the rounded tip member remains next to the distal end of the sleeve member during the advancement of the sleeve member; and

inflating the balloon to dilate the tissue defining the desired position.
